Voluntary Severances Being Offered

There was an email that went out today that indicated that the multiple unions that represent the unionized Gas Distribution Utility Business Unit workers in Ontario were approached by the company and offered to extend voluntary severance packages to 100 of their members collectively.

Was anyone else told by their directors that there would be no voluntary severance packages offered, or is it just my misunderstanding?

To any senior employees who want a package, read page 87 of the brand new collective agreement. There is a voluntary severance option there. Good way to get your package and save a young worker.

This should have gone to a vote by the membership. What this lays bare is the fact the unions are interested in member numbers and collecting dues, not the actual people.

Apparently one LUG union accepted.

"Local 975 was approached by the company but the union has decided not to help the company reduce the workforce, meaning if the company wants to eliminate union positions they need to go after people with the least seniority"

Although the email may have originated from Local 975 union leadership, the post states all the local unions were approached and they all agreed not to accept it. Local 975 is the sole local for the old LEG franchise area while LUG has multiple locals and those multiple LUG locals are collectively represented via something they call "Gas Council".

The union is going to lose 100 positions, and instead of making some older folks close to retirement who will happily leave voluntarily with severances and keeping the youngins who will pay union dues for years to come and thank the union for saving them, we're "sticking it to the man" by making everyone unhappy? And we pay for this?
