Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Can manager retaliate if I try to move teams?

I despise my LL6 and am miserable working under them.

Can my LL6 block my move by giving a bad rating or something?

I was blocked from excepting a job for which they allowed me to interview. After many years of trying, I was never able to get into that group to do the type of work that I always wanted to do. I ended up having to leave Ford to get better opportunities. Do yourself a favor and get the he-l out of Ford as soon as you can.

If you have direct knowledge of misconduct, simply gather the evidence and contact a lawyer, like this Hyundai employee. Get whistleblower protection. Then, you can make a lateral move.

Yes and your manager will retaliate. Look for another job outside Ford, then put in your 2 week notice. At your exit interview, don’t mention anything negative, just Ford is all rainbows and unicorns.

Cheap people will always do cheap politics!
Ford is known for having cheap quality people like their executives!

Supervisor here. Yes LL6 can block a transfer but the person can escalate to LL5 or higher. At least from my observation it's a rare thing that it's blocked forever, usually only long enough to do a knowledge transfer or complete a critical project.

From my perspective I don't see the point in blocking. If they're not happy, why have them bring the whole team down? Let them go be unhappy somewhere else.

They way I was able to move is that I locked in the job before anyone in my department knew about it, essentially the group wanted me and luckily I had my new manager pulling for me. I did mention the old group would not let me go to him.

I requested some time from my old manager where I planned to leave and he mentioned he would see me when gets in the office. He IM'd me to let me know he was in the office and when I was headed to chat with him to tell him, I ran into my female-witch boss and she was yelling at my pretty good in front of my coworkers for my assignment. She always would clutch her fist and grind her teeth. Could only imagine this is the reason why she was single.

Unlike my timid typical self I was very frustrated and mad when I showed up to the his office. I demanded to be transferred immediately, he was trying to chat civilized and I was in no mood and said 'let me go or I'll quit'. Maybe d-mb to do, but my blood pressure was way high.

Luckily for me I got the transfer, but my moral of the story is to call the new manager or supervisor first before the cat is out of the bag that you want to leave. This is how you do it, lock it in before anyone knows about it. Them wanting to keep you typically means you are a hard worker and they will have a difficulty time replacing you. There is nothing to lose, if they won't go to bat for you here, it probably isn't the best place to go to.

What a joke - how can anyone get professional growth, without moving around every now and then. I would also recommend working for different employers !!! This place doesn't own your soul, get diverse experience so you qualify for many jobs at different employers - do not lock yourself in. And to compound this $hit-hole, imagine being terrified of losing your job for professional growth. I can tell you what name brand I wouldn't buy if I was you !!!

Yes your LL6 can block your move. We had a LL6 nicknamed McConArtist who was famous for this. Tactics used, typically serially

  • claim you are critical for the position and can’t move
  • conduct a whisper campaign claiming you lack skills
  • conduct a whisper campaign claiming you lack social skills (not a team player)
  • conduct a whisper campaign claiming you have mental health issues
  • drive wedges between you and your peers, giving credit for your work to your peers etc
  • give you bad review
  • attempt to fire you
  • attempt to sabotage your career outside of Ford

The only ways to escape are

  • exit Ford without tipping your boss off that you are job searching
  • finding a LL5 with a position who knows the game that is being played and wants you in his department

How it went down for me once I saw what McConArtist was up to

  • spoke with LL5 over the group with the position
  • he approached McConArtist who said I was only person with the skills so couldn’t move
  • LL5 asked how long it would take for knowledge transfer and they agreed on 3 months
  • During the 3 months McConArtist conducted constant whisper campaigns
  • At the end of the 3 months McConArtist was shocked that the LL5 still wanted me and there was an intense meeting with HR, LL5 and McConArtist where McConArtist was trying to fire me and slinging mud and the LL5 called him on his BS.
  • The move was successful, but McConArtist continued slinging mud until he retired a couple of years ago.

Not all LL6 are as bad as McConArtist, but you will need to have an LL5 or above who is willing to stick their neck out.

I was blocked once upon a time. I went and interviewed at 3 suppliers, got offers from each of them. All more money, all closer commute, all with a sign in bonus. I picked one and gave my LL6 my resignation and 2 week notice. They kept me the 2 weeks surprisingly. Late at the end of the last week I was unblocked and the LL5 that wanted me brought me over. I stayed at Ford, and with a pay bump.

It can work, but it's risky. I was committed to going to the supplier, however we stayed in good graces and they are still one of my several Plan B's should Ford can me.

A manager can block your move a number of ways. Primarily either trash talking you if a hiring manager happens to call them for a reference; which is ridiculous if they do ..... but most do. Second, is that they simply tell HR and/ or the hiring Mgr that you are unavailable and there is no way they can let you go. Years ago I was in a section and we had a LL6 do that to everyone in the group trying to move on or get promoted. It was ridiculous yet HR knowingly let it go on. The only way I was able to escape was that the hiring Mgr was a LL5 and did not call as they knew how things worked at Ford. The LL6 tried to fight it and was able to force a buy-back agreement on me. The LL5 was smarter and knew those could be broken and agreed. Once I processed over to the other org, he got it broken. At Ford you unfortunately have to be smarter and faster than most of the incompetence they have in management. I am now a manager and I am continually shocked with the stupidity of my peers.

I guess really consider leaving the company. I see people on here asking this quite a bit. Is it not an option to leave? More potential to boost income by 20 percent. I'm surprised at how many people don't see this as an option. LL's can still reach you in another department. Another company not so much.

Just leave. Is your peace worth it? Don't tell me your Ford salary and benefits are really that good.

You'd have to quit and find a new job at another company.

How would I get out of the team if they are blocking me?

Yes. Your LL6 can block a lateral move.

If your LL6 is going to do that then you definitely need to get out of that team.
