Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Data centers

How in the world did Cisco miss the data center business to a company which was selling CDs and books? Cisco had all the components and Amazon had none. Still amazes me after all these years. Cisco was busy at the time buying the $590m "Flip". This was not a simple mistake. There are other heart breaking examples as well.

When I left Cisco when they had 70,000 employees. Last week Cisco announced new layoff and it had 84,900 employees. This is after 5-7 layoffs. Do the math. You know what that mean. These are not layoff. They are replacing high pay with cheap outsourcing every times.

Yours sincerely,
Cisco alum

So Cisco has failed because some other company is better? That is not a good excuse. Cisco has failed due to lack of vision and invention. Can someone name a product that was invented by Cisco during the past few years. New line of switches, routers and wireless APs do not count.

In fairness they had a much smaller product portfolio and they had the advantage of knowing basic software techniques so they didn't need hundreds of different implementations of the same feature, each copied across hundreds of branches.

I remember when Chambers crowed that we were going to invest $50M in Nimbus - after Amazon had been investing billions in their cloud business for years.

But, hey, we were Cisco! Nothing was too ridiculous for our Powerpoint slides!

The reasons for Cisco decline is obvious. All major hyperscalers realized they can build their own switch. Along with their own compute and storage. Enterprise moved to the cloud.

Plus Arista Network came along with from scratch OS that is better.

Yea, we were going to get into consumer electronics (Linksys acquisition) and launch a hideous platform (not associated with Linksys) UMI looking to bring telepresence to consumer living rooms! The set up was so complex and awkward only cisco could have created it. We waste money on everything but out core business. Up-Chuck chuck and ELT are hyper delusional enough to think we are anything but a plumbing company for enterprise and service provider packets

i don't think the geniuses that were kissing JCs butt, telling him what a brilliant plan he had, were target in the LRs that followed that catastrophe

How did Cisco miss the cloud business? Easy: lack of courage and planning. Cisco was too concerned it would compete with its own SP customers and did nothing for years. Then it tried to catch up with AWS using a broken in-house development effort called Nimbus. It was based on Openstack and owned by CX then IT. That's how clueless the ELT already was back then!

Executive are paid top money to forecast the future market or disrupt/create the future market for their products.

Flip was a stupid move, but that was not the only one.

Enter WHIPTAIL ($415M) and Monterey Networks ($7.4 BILLION)!!!

Hey, don’t diss the Flip! Cisco was ahead of its time…15 second videos were the future! Flip 2009, Instagram 2010.

Well, maybe not the right move for an Enterprise focus company 🥳
