Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Checking In: four months out from being laid off, how's it going?

For me, it's been (sadly) wonderful.

Granted I retired so I'm not looking for a new job but in hindsight QC was the least interesting and least fulfilling place I ever worked at. Lots of good people equally balanced by lots of toxic people, both technically and socially.

Maybe it's just age and it's not QC specifically but fighting the same battles every day for 15 years and having to navigate the silly politics of the QC culture sure makes it something I don't miss.

@ QFree which faang? Faangs are no longer equal. Some are layoff specialists (google), some have become an extension of Q (fruit), some are getting rid of freeloaders (meta), some have a culture of perpetual fear of pip (amazon), so tell us, which faang? !!!!

Laid off after 18 years, got a job in 2 months in FAANG with less stress and way less politics.

I worked at Q from 1994 to 1997 in San Diego and then Boulder until 1999. The people that worked hard and had the right skills were appropriately promoted. I don't recall any dead weight while I worked there. It truly was a wonderful place to work. The Bagel talks were a Friday morning favorite amongst us in Boulder.

Then it changed. Q went to the darkside in 99 when they sold the BTS/BMS(?) (Tetra) portion off to Ericsson. The top executives like Jacobs , Sulpizio, Sullivan etc relieved up to 1100 people of their stock options, coerced a severance package on us and in the end they got very wealthy from that as the stock price went from fifty to thousands of dollars a share. They should be proud.

Maybe as they take their last breaths they will suddenly remember what they did.

re: "Q itself is half the company it once was."

That's being way to generous. More like !% of what it once was. I worked there twice, first for 5 years, left then back for 9 and laid off.

In the late 90s to early 2000s it was upbeat, fun place to work. Year-end parties were
over-the-top at the Manchester Grand Hotel ( 3 floors)! It seemed like there were tape-out parties for the eng team (beer, food, etc.) nearly every quarter. People worked hard, yet played hard too. Sadly now, Qcom is a mere shadow of it's former self.

I believe it will be reluctantly acquired in the near future. This would be welcome news to investors. RIP, the once mighty QCOM

ex-Q employee at job interview:

Interviewer: I see your specialty is AI. Can you describe your work?

ex-Q: I got a research paper's source code from github and ran it.

Interviewer: And...?

ex-Q: Made a powerpoint presentation showing the same results.

Interviewer: Thank you, we'll be in touch.

Good for those who are retired but not for those who are looking for a job. As bad as working for Q was, the pay and benefits were good. Lots of useless laid off Q employees are getting a reality check. They are not even able to get a job at half the pay.

Good riddance to Q!

Getting laid off was one of the best things to ever happen happen to Me.
RETIREMENT IS AWESOME!
No more being strapped to a desk all day long, dealing with uptight engineers and managers, d-mb meetings, asinine schedules...

"I pity the fools" who are still there throwing their lives away.

@huf+1r9lZDUe I don't care about others chasing titles. Good for them. If they deserve it, it will come to them, and all who deserve it through hard work. (Assuming its a meritocracy). I do care about the knives those chasing titles carry and use, their behavior, what they say, what they do. It affects others on the team, and I've seen many many many people quit because of a few bad apples. I didn't, but eventually I did. Let the bad apples get their titles, whatever, but it's not necessary to be a cowardly d!ck in the process. Do you understand what I'm saying? I hope so.

@fgi+1r9lZDUe if you care about others chasing titles, that also makes you shallow. If you care about innovations that makes you part of the solution.

I just did my taxes.... I made way more money back in 2022 while I was at Q-cesspool, than I did in 2023 where I spent most of it enjoying life (and looking for a new job, which I got). But it's amazing how miserable I was personally, while my bank account was happy. I would much rather be stress-free and happy. My new job is stress-free too, with good people who care about the work and product, not titles and internal competition. I can't believe the Q cr@p Dirs, VPs, and overzealous douches clawing for principal titles with no integrity and humanity that I had to live with. Money and title definitely don't buy you happiness - unless you're that shallow.

8 months since my layoff. I'm retired and enjoying it. For me, I didn't have any problems with Qualcomm. All the people I worked with seemed fine. I've worked in far worse places. I might consider going back for contract work if that ever comes up, but 40 years in engineering seems enough, and I have too many things I want to do in my new life.
