Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Laid off may turn out to be the lucky ones

Losing a job here may be the best thing that happened to any of us. I do not see this company becoming any better nor ever returning to what it once was. Given the mgmt, I do not think they have capacity to come up with something that can dig us out of the hole. Good luck to all of us, and remember that those who end up laid off may turn out to be the lucky ones.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that. It's much easier to look for another job outside of where you're at when you already have a role.

No matter what the current direction Nike is going, this job market is tough. Be thankful if you stay with the company.

Nope, I'm not from HR. Nope, I'm not JD.

Sending my best to everyone.

Meh - yes it might be a relief to exit a toxic workplace and get severance, health care, unemployment while looking for a new job...

And yet if getting laid off were that lovely, why all the anxiety and stress over losing one's job? I've been laid off in the past and it's no picnic - the shame/stress/anxiety; the fact that most LinkedIn job posts are ghost postings that never go anywhere; and in this town the other two similar brands (CSC & Adidas) are super toxic as well (my wife worked at Adidas previously, ex-Nike colleague now working at CSC which they all call a "mini nike") so where are we supposed to land quickly when we have a family to support and bills to pay?

Not saying it's hopeless in the Portland/Beaverton area in today's job market but it is challenging, especially if you've got a mortgage (like many of us) and/or precarious work visa situation.

Bottom line: waiting to hear if you still have a job is h-ll, getting laid off is h-ll, job hunting is h-ll, none of it's easy so let's all give each other some grace.

Nike has several problems. It forgot how to market and tell authentic, compelling stories. The product is stale. That’s all occurring during a time when the marketplace is far more bifurcated & dispersed than it used to be. Consumers are harder to market to and they have an ever increasing number of options. All of this is further compounded by the law of large numbers. Growing a $50B company is much harder than growing a smaller company. A problem since all of Nike’s competitors are smaller.

Nike isn’t going away anytime soon. I do think however that it’s high single digit annual growth days may be over. If it’s struggling to retain those prior growth rates now when the economy is as good as its ever going to be it’s going to struggle when things slow. As they inevitably will. Working at a “We’re getting by I suppose” company is a very different proposition than working at a company that is still robustly growing. Regrettably I think the culture, job security, and the cache of Nike will be the biggest victims. We’re already seeing this and I don’t think that this time - unlike prior times - it’s just a small speed bump.

Nike’s demise has been predicted many times and the doubters have always been wrong. It feels different this time though. As if this time Nike, like any 70+ year old, isn’t going to bounce back quite like it used to.

Yes, Bidenomics are actually working and doing what they're supposed to for the most part. Because the economy has been so strong it's caused inflation to remain high (too much demand) so rates haven't been cut yet, and jobs usually get cut as a result of higher borrowing rates (companies look to cut costs rather than borrow to spur growth).

Perhaps eventually. However, it will hurt for a while given that the job market at this point is far from comforting. Just look at how many organizations are executing layoffs. Look at how many months it's been for so many people out there without a job. It's scary, stressful, and unpredictable. So please just be aware of these facts.

Normally I would agree but I can’t even begin to explain how bad the job market is.
