Ranking - Uneasiness

My management has had hesitation in telling me where they will pre-assess me in the upcoming performance assessment cycle. They have given vague feedback that is generic or try to maneuver around the question. From what I've read on here, if there is a hesitation in giving you an absolute ranking prior to the assessment meeting, that could be a sign that you are informally already slotted to be NSId. I also understand that telling someone they'll be NSId ahead of time can cause anxiety but it can also help prepare them for the future. Anyone else also experience this and should I begin to job hunt ?

Mgr here. No one is allowed to share feedback or where someone is Pre-assessed. You may have managers signal that you have nothing to worry about, however it should never be brought up because you are in a pool with so many others and no one can predict outcomes. I wouldn’t worry about it as I have seen the best performers get NSI’d and poor performance get ranked well.

Very confident that my 'manager' has a bus lined up for me. Inspiring.

Employees that ask their pre assessment category do not have a sponsor and are valid targets to be thrown under the bus by their supervisor just so their supervisor can reach the artificial PIP target number.

A lot of people get NSI’d that did a very good job.

At some point there will not be enough knowledge left in Houston to correct the absolute garbage coming from BTC. Management does not see the garbage because it gets corrected in USA before going upward.

Senior management has no clue the rework done in USA that makes BTC seem productive.

Do you want to work year after year with this anxiety? Look now while you have a job. In the interview with the new employer, ask how performance is measured and communicated.

Employees that ask for their pre assessment category usually signal they know they had some performance issues / shortfalls or they recognize that others performed better.

The performance measurement process is a scam.

Managers should never give employees their pre-assessment categories as there are zero guarantees that it will stay the same at the end of the meeting. Even asking for that is a sign of weakness that could hurt you in the meeting.

@2rmq Do you really believe that ranking is a legitimate process based on actual performance and contribution in the relevant period? Too funny.

Wrong. If your SLS has hesitation with literally telling you where you will be assessed, that’s normal, because it’s impossible for them to predict the future. SLS can create a seriatim list of there folks, but until the assessment meeting is done, no one knows how it will shake out.

  1. P.'s, Directors and Managers in every business unit get together in a pre-assessment meeting without H/R for a preliminary ranking of all employees. No meeting minutes are taken and if there are any notes brought to the preliminary ranking, those notes are shredded when everyone leaves the conference room

Your Supervisor or Manager can throw you under the bus prior to the ranking meeting with a suggested rank placement then bury you under the bus in the meeting in your 2 minute drill.

I know from personal experience.

Yes it is uneasy that managers can selectively take PDS & KO info and angle it in almost any way they want to fit a story, most times preconceived.
It’s also why most executives are just good salesmen as those type of skills are (over) valued.

If you manager is not committing to feedback that means they are not confident you will be competitive in ranking. You see this a lot when they had difficulty defending your relative contribution in the last cycle. Definitely not a good sign. How often do we hear of people given positive feedback in initial assessment only to be NSI in the actual ranking?

Never heard of a pre assessment. What I have heard is they are wrangling in 20-27 during rankings. So that should be awesome. DW had a chance to clean this up but looks like these folks live in a bubble.

If your manager has not been keeping you in the loop in the last six months and has routinely been sending you emails on your "lack of performance" in the last six months, then you have already indirectly received your pre-assessment.

Actions speak louder than words.

Troll. No one gets a pre-assessment. You should be NSI If you are asking for one.

Assessment groupings moved around this year for some sites. Managers are uneasy because they do not have a good feel for how the new groupings will affect the assessment vs historical.
