one of my friend joined discover, been a year now and got scared about the merger news if there will be a layoff. Any insights will be helpful.

I agree w/prev comment. I've been through this at other companies. They may calm your questions until the time is right for them. Overall they are going to do what is right to save cost of duplication.
Most definitely will happen. Schwab just laid off 2000 plus as the merger with TDA is becoming final.
It won't happen until MONTHS from now and that is IF the feds don't block the merge. If it does go through, then no doubt C1 will be culling redundant roles. It has to happen, C1 isn't stupid enough to keep redundant and "unneeded" roles on payroll.
