Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Don’t Blame it All on JD

When I started at Nike over 10 years ago my boss at the time said something to the effect of “you know you’ve been here a while when you have a conversation with someone in an elevator and discover that they do what YOU do.” Let’s be honest: Nike has been bloated for a long time (see earlier threads about how hard it is to fire under performers). On JDs watch, this trend has continued unabated. There are a zillion different analytics orgs, insights orgs, data science orgs, etc etc. An analytics org for every Geo. As we nervously await word of our fate, part us should hope JD is making the right decision and can get this Dog of the Dow back back on track. Especially in the face of lost income, our wealth will depend on it. And if that does not happen, then it is the board who should be holding JD accountable.

This is about cost-cutting. In a few months after the layoffs, Nike will be hiring again for the same positions, but the salaries will be a lot lower. They are taking advantage of the current business environment where a lot of people have been laid off, and they think they can get comparable talent at a lower price.

Anytime you see companies take cost-cutting measures, it is because they are out of ideas on how to grow their business. Cutting cost is a whole lot easier than growing revenue and sales. JD and his team have no ideas left.

@nrn+ can't agree more. Looking forward to seeing that happen. Like how they realized CDA was a mistake

I get your point, but data science, Insights, reporting ARE different jobs. And some of these need to be paired to each function that makes decisions. I can guarantee that in less than 6 months we are going to have a crisis for not having some of those functions.

I would have agreed with your post and perspective if Nike was not hiring for the same roles! We lost our veteran admin just so we hire another admin who is clueless BTW! Fired an IC with 10 years experience just to hire someone with less experience

Nike acts like a tech company wanna-be but JD would never volunteer to cut his pay like some other real tech companies do to take partial responsibility. He truly is one of the worst leaders you can fine

What Is a CEO? Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) are responsible for leading an entire organization or company (Google).
Shouldn't leaders understand their organization's needs? Shouldn't leaders be on the offense per Nike Maxim's? How did we get where we are NOW without his approval? He did what other companies were doing during COVID. Overhired and now wants to trim back so let's face it - he failed as a leader. Still waiting for accountability for him and his ELT.
