Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

3 Reasons why you need not fear of Layoff

* Easier said than done *

  1. Being ‘let go’ at one company does NOT mean you can’t thrive at another. In fact, I think a vast majority of people find a renewed excitement and sense of purpose at their next company. So open your mind to that possibility and imagine what could be.
  1. You will likely receive a fair exit package. Severance packages are intended to provide people with the appropriate amount of funds to support them while they look for another job. That means, you will have time and space to pause, examine your current priorities, identify your purpose, and find the next company and role that will light you up each and every day. You may find this is the first time in your entire life where you have space to do this. What a gift (if you are willing to see it that way)!
  1. The decision is out of your control. Full stop. When you realize that many things, like the decision if your role is eliminated or not, are completely out of your control, you may find a sense of peace (rather than fear) is what comes over you. Let go of trying to control your environment, because an attempt to do so is completely futile. Be open to what comes next and see what silver lining emerges.

Stay strong friends… 🤗💓

@1xay+1rc2Ph68 You shouldn’t paint with a broad brush just because you’ve been smart and lucky enough to keep your head above water.

Some people have expensive chronic health conditions. Some people are paying for their parents to be looked after in old age. Some people are drowning in debt. Some people have young children.

I’m glad you’re comfortable. Happy for you even. But I’m also disappointed at the empathy your post lacked.

Americans aren’t struggling because of avocado toast, they’re struggling because of companies like Nike putting Wall Street above their own employees. Thank god I’m not actually JD’s family because I’m sure he’d cash my life insurance policy while setting up its payout.

@raq, maximum unemployment is $3,248/month. That’s actually decent support. A lot of other states offer about 1/2 that.

My monthly expenses are $3,800/month and I have an emergency savings account. At age 43. Times like this are exactly why I didn’t buy a fancy house, a fancy car, or most of the other trappings of modern life. No car payment, no credit card debt, and no loans. Just a modest mortgage and normal monthly bills like utilities. Allows me to get laid off and have that be a minor inconvenience rather than a potential financial emergency. Not to mention, living a minimalist life without a lot of “stuff” is oddly satisfying and liberating.

  1. Thrive: Most are not getting let go because they didn’t thrive. Performance has nothing to do with the decisions of a third party company hired to cut headcount.
  2. Unless you are a VP - A 3 month severance does not equate to going on a meditation retreat. It will take close to a year to find the next job in the current marketplace if not longer.
  3. Fear vs reality check: This country has no safety net? Max unemployment is at 3k a month - try living on that! Or cashing out your 401k?

I am at the point in my career that I was planning to retire in 10 years or so. Starting new at new place just doesn't sound all that appealing.

Seriously praying to all the gods to be laid off. I know some people are very afraid and I don’t want to be insensitive to that, but personally I’ve had enough and I’m ready to say goodbye. It would be nice to do it with a severance package if possible.
