The dead weight is the Ford family and friends, getting paid 4-times their worth.

Were going to have everybody come into the office starting 3/5, and we’re going to shove all of engineering and purchasing into PDC where it has about half the amount of desks that we need. I am not convinced that this lack of planning isn’t for a purpose. This is 100% to force attrition.

@1gvw+1rdv4Wuo. There is a difference between being prepared to move on, verses visibly making it known that you have 1 foot out the door. Refusing management's RTO directive sends the message that a replacement needs to be found.

@gnh+1rdv4Wuo Exactly what I was thinking. I don't care for career advancement, since I have a top technical position at Ford, and I am not interested in pursuing management positions. My only issue is that I bet to the wrong horse (Ford). At this point of my life, is harder for me to find another job. I would prefer keep working for a few more years, preferibly remotely.

However, I am sure that in a couple of years many of us will be no longer part of the Ford dysfunctional "family". The company had too many losses, still lacking leadership and no vision at all. Ford seems to be the new "Sears", bleeding money and customers to a slow death. Therefore, management will try to cut losses and revamp the company through more layoffs, more failed "leadership" from other companies, and more government assistance. I don't even know if AM could pull Ford from the hole it is now.

Loyalty to Ford is a fools pursuit. The decision to let people go, and who to let go is most often made by people with little or no knowledge of the employees being released. Dedicating your life to someone that has very little if any influence on your future with the company, or to someone whose relationship to you can literally change overnight with a reorg is a fools folly. Good luck with that if you choose to do it, but your best bet is to focus on doing your job to the best of your ability and be prepared to move on at a moments notice.

Many of the most dedicated employees were already back in the office. Large companies won't be loyal to employees, but they like employees to be loyal. They like to control that loyalty. Remote employees already have one foot out the door. A few can write their own ticket, but not many. It is just not worth the investment on someone signaling they will be gone before long. Better to find a cheaper employee that you have control over. Make your own choices, but have a realistic understanding of what Ford is as well as your value to your organization. You can complain about Ford management being misguided with RTO, but that won't change anything. It isn't just Ford.

I used to agree that RTO could be used for this purpose, but it seems short-sighted for a company to do so as they have no control over who they lose in the process. With actual layoffs, they at least have some control but I guess the optics are bad?

So not sure anymore. But I know some stats came out recently that remote workers were more likely to be cut.

“Dell (DELL) , a tech company that’s famous for its PC products, earlier this month began mandating most of its employees to return-to-the office three days a week and has given some workers the option to work remotely with the risk of stunting career advancement opportunities.”. Happy to stunt my career. I’ve gone as far as I can in progression. If I’m still a productive employee who cares about doing good work, that should be all that matters.

This is not a layoff - company is trying to get back in track doing what it believes is necessary. RTO is a leadership directive. If coming into work is a problem for you, then you should seek other employment that allows you to work from home. People who transition back into the office smoothly have the best shot at future success at Ford.
