Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Workers are fighting back against RTO

https://wallstreetnow.co/en/articles/2024/02/27/deutsche-bank-faces-internal-backlash-over-remote-work-policy-risking-trust

So it’s almost a month now and they told us we should have an update by 3nd of this month, yet there’s no plan for RTO. They made up this plan, but without a plan.

Instead of looking at each department and the need for face time, they made all of us go back to the office, even the people that will sit by themselves and forced to listen to office drama from other departments. That’s how it was for me before remote since I was the only person in my department at the location. So much office drama to distract me

I have worked from home for 8 years as well as my coworkers. So far 3 people on my Team have been told they have to report to the office - one person is in a wheelchair, has worked for the Bank for 24 years, worked from home for 8 years and does not live on a bus line. He was told to file a "HR report" stating he was disabled and needs to work from home. HR response: Go to the doctor and have the doctor complete forms stating you are disabled and then you will need to do that yearly.

Maybe it’s time to form a union

Interesting, I never thought people that were against remote work are poorly educated.

I also only received a 1% raise. No way a possible raise is going to cover the cost of commuting. I will stay remote until till the next performance review next year when they will probably threaten to terminate me.

Until I get warning of losing my job, I am staying home. Forget the little raise that doesn’t cover cost of transportation and 6 hours of my life wasted per week commuting.

I work for another financial institution that mandated 3 days a week RTO and added it to the performance goals with the "risk" of not getting a pay increase for non-compliance. My raise this year was just below 1.5%. It just doesn't make sense financially to drive into an office building just to get a a raise that doesn't match inflation.

Since tomorrow is March and we have 30 days from receipt of notice, that means we don’t have to show up till April. So much for their q1 deadline! Unless we all get an in scope email tomorrow…

If you’re assigned to an office and not remote you’re supposed to return by end of Q1 according to the email from last month. But I don’t think anything is being enforced until they send the emails about who’s in scope. It says in scope will be determined by each hub area taking into account traffic and commute time and such but the range is likely 30 miles. You’ll be contacted when you’ve been determined to be in scope and have 30 days to start showing up at the office. Says they want to move as “quickly as possible” so I’d expect the notice next month.

What does marked in scope mean? I am assigned to a building and not a remote employee , but haven’t been in office since 2020. My manager hasn’t said anything to me. How do I know I am one of those people that must return today?

Huge FAQ posted along with the email earlier. If you were hired on as remote, not anymore you aren’t. 30 days to go back to office from the day you’re marked as in scope. Says they want to roll this out ASAP. Open seating will be a thing at most hubs (no assigned desks). Time in office will be a metric for performance reviews.

Personally, I actually feel bad for HR. This is going to be one sh*t storm for them.

I’m back at work in a cube in StL. I print allot of things for my job. I print them one by one and make a trip across the floor to pick them up - one by one. I might stop at a desk or two on my way to and from the printer to (collaborate) for a while. I join every group and meeting that I can. Most of my coworkers do too. If collaboration is the reason they want us back to the office, then we will do it. Even if our productivity bottoms out.

You crybabies crack me up.

Just quit then. That's what leadership really wants anyway.

You mean the coffee shops near my house where I go when I drop my kids off at school? Or are you talking the severe lack of places to eat or coffee shops to visit when I have to go in to work?

It's hilarious these b-ms think they can tell us that these hubs differ from the old model because within the new hubs, you can develop your career effectively. Nothing will change and these dipsh-ts think some verbiage around career development will make us excited to go in.

So they gave an update to 17 and up yesterday, but no news for us lowbies? What does risk losing employment me? We keep hearing different things. They told us it will be part of your performance review, but it’s up to your manager to determine the%. So are they going to fire us if we go in 2 days a week instead of 3? Or just no raise? I will take no raise then go back to office because the cost of commuting will cost me more than the 1 to 2 percent raise.

17's and above received the "talking points" on Wednesday. Every employee who lives within 50 miles of a "hub" is required to return to office or risk employment. Expect a company wide zoom call with Gunjan and other executives demanding you return to office while presenting from their vacation home offices. So much for "meaningful" moments. Again always remember that top talent has choices and top flight employers are seeking top talent in this tight labor market. Only companies seeking to trim the fat are instituting these insulting measures, if USB was serious about RTO they would divest in TEAMS and other virtual tools.

"When did U.S. Bank decide to drop its “green” focus"

Pro tip: The company does not care about anything. Its just virtue signaling. G-y bank branches, minorities, going green, etc...list goes on. They just throw up a banner on the front page and that is the extent of them caring.

As for the RTO its just a way for the bank to get people to quit without having to shell out severance. It is very expensive to layoff people. They already spent a fortune laying off people in 2023. To make employees miserable so that they quit is free. Ultimately its just to get the stock back up. Shareholders like to see "trimming the fat" as they call it.

Regarding this, I work for a for-profit bank, not a charity.

But at least you didn’t conjure up the lame “need to collaborate.” I do that famously well with my 10 times zones, thank you very much.

When did U.S. Bank decide to drop its “green” focus for global warming? In 2022 this document publishes need for business practices that protect our natural environment. I try bike or bus to work but due to layoffs I’m doing two jobs and managing two levels below me. I’ll end up driving because I can’t add the commute time to the already OT hours.

Anyone else in same boat?

I'm in a job that has almost no interaction with others. Why do I need to go into an office? If I need to interact with a co-worker or my manager, email or Teams works just fine.

And responding to post ID @1knb+1rhH7OuE, people can still go to all of those things outside of working hours.
