All Hands Hilarity

I've been mulling over the truly stupid all-hands calls I've attended whilst at IBM.

My favourite was the collection of all hands calls immediately after the pandemic for an unnamed development department.

In the first call, the executive tried to demonstrate he was one of us by regaling us about how he loved to collect muscle cars. And how much his wife hated him working from home.

In the second call - some months later, he tried to demonstrate how much he was one of us by discussing how he took a year off to cycle on his fancy carbon-fibre bike. And how much his wife hated him working from home.

Truly a man of the people. By the end of these calls, I was on the verge of recommending the man a marriage therapist. Or at least asking if I can't send his wife wine in sympathy.

Does anyone else have any fun stories about laughable all hands? Obviously no confidential details. It'll make us feel better when we're RA'ed.

Two master's degrees under my belt, still running a leader positions in the Army Reserve and years of high professional and skilled work at IBM's most prestigious clients, I thought I would end my working days on staff position. In my personal working life I have met people who have taught me a lot. Great people. Unfortunately, none of these in IBM.... I’ve experienced the lowest point of my career in the company when I witnessed the tragic and comical "All Hands call" in which a total incompetent Executive band C (overpaid) sought consensus by playing as a clown-actor while dozens of yes-managers, like primates, followed him. It was during the Covid crisis, while people were dying and we were struggling to keep the business running, he call a the mandatory international video conference. To support or help our efforts? No, the focus was “smartworking: you and your pets”. On the screen, dozens of depressed people immortalized their faces with their pet's face. It was a total waste of time, simply grotesque but the icon of the IBM fatal decadence...... Luckily for me, that's the past. Folks, please be back to the real word.......
