Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nobody seems happy at Nike

From reading this board and talking to my coworkers, it seems like most of the employees are very unhappy here. It's not just the layoffs, it's clear that the entire culture and work environment are the issue. If nothing changes for the better, Nike should be really careful. Companies have been known to go out of business with this kind of employee morale.

Have worked for companies in financial distress (Nike is not there - yet), where employees were treated better. Your people matter. That is the #1 goal of effective management. Even if don’t have much to offer them, you can treat them with respect, be honest with them, organize the company to be efficient, define peoples roles and responsibilities, look to cut admin and unnecessary work, etc. Focus on doing the right things - for both our consumers & customers, as well as our employees, and regardless of the results people will believe in you. What those looking up the chain see is fiefdom builders, boot lickers, back stabbers, and folks trying to cash options rather than creating a ‘process’ for long term success. Simple adjustment - make everything pay to play, make every team budget for the costs they create - especially when one team creates costs for another. Right now the impacted teams cannot recoup any of that cost. Priorities will align when every team has to budget for costs they create. Teams will collaborate versus lobbing stink bo--s at each other, and so on. Lastly, stop the reorganizations, is so bad right now, nobody knows who owns stuff. Align by business function, not tools or fancy names with no info about what functions that team owns. Nike has turned into the “no, that’s not mine, go away” culture instead of “I don’t know, but let me help you find out” culture that is needed to be effective

Too many new 'leaders' just don't care. They are here to build their empire, make more money, acquire titles and then move on. Take SB in GT for example, the guy couldn't even bother to wear Nike gear to town halls he was hosting for like 2 years. One of his prize hires, SG, quoted an Adidas slogan when asked what his favorite maxim was. Even longer tenured folks fall into the trap and become yes men to earn that VP title. It's sad. Whatever happened to 'do the right thing'. Nike needs to get back that culture of winning by delivering the best product and experience for the consumer, obsessing over that perfection, not by being the best corporate climber, or the one to cut the most good people.

Hard to be when you were basically told that you might be fired at any time before the end of May. It could be worse though, you could be the CEO, forced to sit in discomfort.

I 1000% agree. Unfortunately, it’s been plummeting ever since we started back as 4:1 From what I’ve seen. People are over worked, picking up pieces from those who have left the company altogether prior to layoffs where roles haven’t been filled to now we’re entering into this new phase of will I even have a job? And will be go back to 5 days a week possibly? On top of now friends and coworkers being let go.. Stocks down, JD isn’t “accountable” for anything and folks are just tired of being second best.
