Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Stop being loyal to VZ

Too many of the new hires seem to have misplaced loyalty when it comes to VZ. It will not serve you well in the long run. Trust me. This company and its leadership will happily milk you for everything they can, pat you on your back for your loyalty and dedication to the company, and then they will lay you off or even fire you if they can without a second thought. Your loyalty will mean absolutely nothing at that moment.

When I first came to Verizon, years ago, I was part of the "go to work, get a paycheck, go home" crowd. I didn't really care one way or the other about the culture, it was there and I was like meh okay."

But now that that culture is completely decimated, and I do mean COMPLETELY, I realize how much I really did take for granted. For the most part, I didn't really consider it that important that the company show me loyalty, but I suppose that changed for me when I watched 3/4 of my coworkers, many of whom were far better at their jobs than I was, get the axe.

There's a lot of comments on this thread that I'm quite honestly disgusted with. "Have a side hustle work hard, follow the old American Dream! Pull yourself up by your bootstraps Verizon doesn't owe you anything!" I do have a side hustle as a matter of fact, and because I live day to day with the realization that I could lose my job for some trumped up stupid reason, I find myself increasingly tempted to do that in place of my work. After all, the environment is rapidly becoming one where everything is so toxic and under the microscope that you can't do anything right by Verizon anyway, so might as well focus on my own stuff until I'm fired. At least that way I get benefits. You may think my view of things is entitled, but I think of it as fatalistic. Verizon shattered any illusion of loyalty they had last June, and then they had the audacity to call that Evolution, even going so far as to treat those people leaving like they were dead weight, when really they were what made Verizon great. If Verizon can just do that without any afterthought at the drop of a hat, why focus on serving their needs when I should be busy building a lifeboat?

The truth is, it's not about what Verizon does or does not owe me or anyone. Op's post wasn't a complaint. It was a warning. Verizon proved their lack of loyalty June 2023, and if there's any reason for us veterans to emphasize that, it's because we're trying to let the newbies know to not get too comfortable. And for me? When I was first hired all I heard nonstop was how great Verizon was at keeping employees and not laying people off, how even if there was restructuring, they were good about moving people around to minimize losses. So yeah I can help but be a little bitter. Name a human on this planet that wouldn't be.

@1scp - Either you r Management or Management A$$KI$$ER. We are not expecting Verizon to make us Super rich but don't think workers should be abused by Management and aftee working long hours under stressful environment just be riffes.. If you didn't experience good for you but Verizon unfortunately gets managers who Kiss up to upper management and kick down to direct reports. That's the ppl skills Management has. Seen managers come and go each wants to be a bigger pr--k than the last.

VZ started going down hill when they decided to put shareholders before customers. Replacing all of VZs loyal, experienced, knowledgeable workers with cheap, incompetent workers from India makes VZ shareholders very happy. As a result, VZ service suks but VZ doesn’t care about the customer.

How about this. Go to work give 100% and then do d-mb things, you know like better educate your self, have a side hustle, investment property, exercise, go to gym and refresh your minds 90% of the posts are from employees who think Verizon owes them something. here is a hint, if you hate Verizon then leave. If you do somehow the company will survive and you all can start your own wireless company to compete against Verizon and put us out of business. You all gripe because your either too lazy or ill equipped to find anything else. I have peers at Verizon who are very wealthy because they combined their work salaries and savings plans along with prudent outside of work investments and projects. My point being that Verizon is a means to an ends. It isn't everything. It is only what you make of the opportunity. Sadly most will do nothing but gripe about what Verizon owes them.

Go to work , get paid , go home . It’s not that complicated .

100% truth. It's not a relationship, it's a job. I care about my work, my co-workers, my clients, but loyalty? Not a term I would use.

This company will stab you in the back before you know it. They couldn’t care less if you live or die.

Saw many butt kissers/ boot lickers get let go in L&D a few weeks ago, along with hard workers that don't kiss anyone's butt. Some folks left were lazy and do the bare minimum or less to be honest. Ultimately if you have 20+ years expect to be cut or if you are new in role for less than 2 years. This is just how thins are rolling, overall I agree do what you can to be a solid employee but don't have it impact your personal life. Concentrate on yourself, VZ is just a paycheck, and we are just a number to VZ, nothing more.

As for milking the workers, that’s specific to department. I do know salaried workers that can’t seem to work less than 60 hours a week. It’s real. It’s rampant.

I also know salaried workers that always seem to be running errands in the background of their conference calls or they can’t review any of the attachments being discussed, or present to participants because their “network connection” is acting up (Whole Foods WiFi tends to be congested midday).

The parts I disagree on are:

  1. ) These new hires have a reason to be beaming and naive, their salaries are higher than peers with 20 years’ tenure who received their promotions internally!
  1. ) The loyalty thing is your perception of a lack of skepticism and cynicism towards the company. So they’re not salty and bitter, so what? It would be a buzzkill to work on a team where everyone was an Eeyore.

If all the company ever does is give you 5 or 10 years of the highest salary you’ve achieved in your career to date, was it really that bad?
