Contractor Gig Thoughts?

Reading these posts of recent. Wow.

Semi-retired; being asked to interview for contractor TAC gig in UCS. Old TAC from 2000s.

Is it even worth considering? Looks miserable over there. Is it worth even contracting these days @ Cisco.

Tell me why I would want to consider. All comments apreciated. Looks like morale is really bad over there. Guess teamwork is also.

How can one trust others or even rely on leads or Managers to support you?

If you are dependent on such things you may be a common-law employee rather than a contractor.

It’s now listen up or shut up.

15-20 years ago in San Jose this was the rule for employees. It was not uncommon on high end programs with multiple teams in attendance to have someone threatened with being fired followed by a 20 minute beating in front of everyone.

If you’re semi retired and just wanna do something come on in and enjoy the show. Data center stuff is still having some life and some good folks. If you don’t really feel like it or have better things to do… meh… Cisco is a good company over all though for work life balance. But I’m saying this as an employee… who they probably hate and wish they could fire

Very different culture than before. It’s now listen up or shut up. How can one trust others or even rely on leads or Managers to support you? Any LR, contractors are first to send packing. Consider all facts before considering.

Former "tac" CSE here. I spent 6 years as an employee. Left for a while came back as a contractor, was swept up in the massive contractor layoff last year, and now I'm back again as a contractor in another group.

The place has changed. It's now a culture of fear and reprisal. Everybody just sics their managers on each other. Nobody talks in the elevators. The "culture" has been replaced with something else.

If you need a job and there's no other option, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, I'd keep moving.

Just my 2 cents.
