Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Job offer

I received a promising offer, but once I looked into the company's background, I saw it had layoffs a few months ago. It's the only issue I've found so far. All other aspects work for me, including the pay and company culture.

I can't decide what to do. Would it be safe to accept a position at a company that had layoffs so recently?

Stay away. It is a company in need of new leadership. It has a chronic culture, suspect leaders and breaks every rule it professes to uphold!

Depends on where you are in your career. OK if just starting out. Spend no more 3 yrs, get some experience, hop into something better. But stay away if you are mid career or beyond. Not sure why you think company culture is good. It's sick & twisted.

You are no better at Cisco. It's always better to look for jobs when you have one. If salary aligns then I'd say accept it as long as it aligns to what you are looking for in your career. Every company has layoffs and issues with management and culture. Cisco will have layoffs after Q3 results and you don't want to be without a job if you are affected

Cisco has had frequent layoffs, sometimes quarterly, for 23 years, and the layoff in February you mention is one of a set that will span from Q3FY2024 (the February layoffs) through Q1FY2025 (ending in October 2024.) As Cisco's management said well over a decade ago, layoffs as often as once a year is a sign of a poorly managed company.

All other aspects work for me, including the pay and company culture.

When interviewing at any company realize they are showing you the datasheet for a job that may or may not exist, and it it does it may be something quite different from what you think. You might have lucked out and found a good team but that doesn't mean you know the larger company culture.

Would it be safe to accept a position at a company that had layoffs so recently?

As a janitor? An engineer? A Vice President? Are you currently unemployed? What other options do you have? These each have different risk profiles associated with them. Safety isn't just not getting laid off now, it's using your current skills while growing new ones, and when you hit the wall of growth make the choice to move on yourself.

I was laid off in February of this year. I’m not upset with Cisco at all. Cisco has amazing benefits for its employees. If you are lucky enough to get with a good team you will be very happy at Cisco. Take the job, grow your skill set, keep a record of your accomplishments throughout the year, keep your resume updated, and always remember your self worth!

This is not the forum to ask this question. People on here are bitter & disgruntled employees. Like all companies, Cisco has its pros and cons. I say go with your gut on your decision.

There are a lot of sour grapes here. The company has issues but what company doesn't?
