Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Am I allowed to be OK?

There are a group of us (I hope) who come from a poor working class who are here. We work very hard and have seen some (if not enough) recognition. We are doing well and from our standards are doing better than most of the World. Is that not OK? I see a lot of complaining and I understand. The anxiety was real for us all but is no one ok with the legit amazing place that we get everyday? My parents worked in factory my whole life and I worked hard enough to be here. Idk I just feel sad reading all the comments and no one recognizing where we are but maybe it is just the population that comments on this site

Be OK, kind and considerate. Nothing wrong with it. Of course it is relieving to know it was not your turn now. Is good to know people that feels proud if their work and effort.

OP - you get a medal for being okay and positive while others are fretting. You are also very grateful not to be impacted, you don’t need permission to be okay. But remember it’s a quick sand environment, no matter how much you bury your head in the sand, the rolling layoffs have a way of affecting even the best, mostly psychological. Don’t ask for validation for how you feel - glad you are okay though , most of us have PTSD and learning to be ok - again

I'm curious to know what brought the OP to these pages in the first place. If I were happy with my job, I wouldn’t even consider surfing the net in a search for employees’ reviews and forums.

Of course you are! As someone laid off in Phase 1 due to retaliation for an ER complaint against my VP, I can still be happy for those that find happiness at Nike. There were many years there where I too was happy. I hope everyone gets the chance to see the good side of Nike, even if it’s harder to find these days. Your happiness does not negate or diminish my lousy experience over the last few years, nor does my experience negate your good one. I hope ppl like you can stick it out and help change things for the better. I for one, wish you well during your time at Nike.

If you are happy that is all that matters, that fact that Nike is corrupt AF and run by clowns doesn't really impact your internal bliss. Another poster mentioned Nike's posting of jobs that are already filled is just one example that they will do anything to get around human decency. I had to lie to my direct reports on several occasions about job postings that were only posted to get around H1-B visa requirements. Many of these direct reports were deserving of promotions and these roles mysteriously showed up reporting to me. Then I had to lie to people that applied for the role that were totally qualified as to why they were not selected to interview.

Are you truly happy at Nike or just grateful to still have a job? The environment on campus after all these layoffs surely must be awful and many people are unhappy. It’s not just those laid off that are disheartened by what Nike has become.

I understand your point and glad you seem ok.
It doesn’t take away the fact of what’s going on.
In my area, they just posted a job this week that has already been filled. The person was promoted and secretly moved in the system before the job was posted. Leadership sat in front of all us and said that the position will be posted all while the choice was already made.
The employees putting in the for position found out when they did something and realized they already reported to this person in a system. Most of the area knows this and Leadership doesn’t know we know.
This is the corrupt BS that is going on and people are tired of it.
Because we can’t do anything about it, it makes people angry. The area I work in is hundreds so this anger is building.
There is a million things I could say here but if I did, nothing would change, and that’s the issue.

Dear OP - Everyone has their Nike experience. What you see on this site is people who have experienced what can be explained as similar to HS playground bullying experience. Passive aggression, poor treatments, psychological and emotional pain. You may be lucky not to have experienced any of this, but your colleagues may have. No one needs to show up and be hampered by a toxic environment with conniving people as their “leaders”. So, empathy could go a long way - for those impacted and those with survivors guilt. For the leaders, learn to lead - because you are not immune to the toxic environment you create

The already privileged thrive at Nike. Educations that their parents could pay for, private school upbringing... and they find each other at Nike, keep that exclusive network going, and keep each other moving up. They have NO IDEA what it took for sone of us and the odds some have overcome. They cannot even imagine or begin to comprehend having to live "that way".

It's exhausting sometimes.

My Jewish great grandpa miraculously survived WWII by the skin of his teeth. Anything is “up” from there right? I could be happy owning nothing and living in the streets by comparison.

I should be grateful to all these non-Nike leaders. They may have destroyed our culture, cut benefits by +20%, and swept countless federal crimes under the rug. But at least they didn’t make me homeless.

Sport is all about fair competition and most importantly competition with ourselves, to become the best “me” possible. Over the last half decade we’ve lost that spirit. Now it’s all about leveraging whatever unfair advantages you can find.

Nepotism exists a lot at Nike. As humans, we adapt to new situations and have limited memory, for better or worse. So while seeing someone who clearly favours some of his direct reports being promoted, or another one telling whatever passive aggressive comments or jokes are being tolerated under the disguise of being a funny team player or witnessing absolute retaliation it affects you. You don’t care about your factory worker grandparents at that point and start feeling happy. Worlds change, conditions change, traditions change. Let’s not confuse gratitude with being okay with whatever a billion-dollar company throws at us. at the end a company is a group of people and currently the sentiment of the collective at Nike is more or less clear: adapt or leave
