Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Attendance Dashboard

Well it's here. There is now a dashboard that tracks if you are on vacation, coming in, or "other absence" aka working from home.

I wish WFI was a joke but it tracks as somebody trying to make it through another PDS cycle.

I could stomach these small steps if I trusted XOM’s long term plan for me but this is just another club to keep us in line as they march us off a cliff.

I need to get back to reviewing my resume.

This is possibly just tracking which jobs can consistently and effectively be performed by WFH such that those positions can be targeted for WFI ( Work From India).

Will the upcoming tropical storm count toward a consecutive non Friday if we wfh? Or does it depend on the supervisor? I wish I was joking with this question.

I do my job and do it well. If your offices arent filled then it's because you made a poor forecast that needs revisit. We do it all the time in projects (called a reappraisal). Do it for the campus and figure out your next steps to fix the real estate problem, not the staff problem.

For people that spend a lot of time at sites e.g GPC, the statistics will look extremely skewed. This is sketch af.

When it gets announced to the broad employees everyone should work from home the next day!

Yup. Our group received one of those emails on Friday. Instantly lost what was left of my motivation. From now on, no f#@ks will be given.

Some of the campus groups received an email on Friday around “at office” attendance tracking by person along with veiled threats of “corrective discussions” for those who are capable of being productive away from the toxic campus.

It's just another step in their plan to reduce workforce at EMHC and offshore/outsource jobs. If they can make us angry & quit, there is no need for layoffs/severance. (Death by Dashboard?) I wonder if they also calculated the productivity loss from a likely acceleration of quiet quitting into these plans? But I guess productivity doesn't matter anyway since the annual Hunger Games ranking process is rigged. Hey management - spare us the charade of your paid-consultant developed WAEM "culture" slogans and employee surveys. We know you don't care. We see you.

Great to see the company is staying consistent in prioritizing all the wrong things. Since your focus is on where my butt is while taking back to back zoom calls all day, my focus will be on watching the clock to give you not one minute of my personal time.

No one is scheduling face to face meetings. We’re all sitting at our desks on zoom. Wtf are we doing?

The MC can sell more buildings if they need to, but forcing people into the office only amplifies the distrust and contrary to the We Are EM behaviors. The staff are doing the work regardless of location. XOM is trying to control the county tax subsidies. The Tax organization better back off. The last time they tried to play this game at Hughes Landing, it didn't turn out well.
Point is : let employees work and supervisors will manage it. If you need to lease a building to someone or close it, then do that. But if you keep pushing, someone is likely to call their uncle on the council and cause DW enough grief to distract him from some real issues and potentially miss earnings or deals.

Welp. I'll be using a lot more personal time. Single parent with young children. I thought I was doing the right thing by WFH while my sick children sleep & pass illness to one another, but I'd hate to mess up those precious metrics or make DW's list!

Folks, you better not WFH 4 consecutive fridays or 4 consecutive non Fridays! And dont WFH 6 or more days in a 4 week period. Or DW will be paying a visit.

It’s completely unfair that it’s totally up to chance depending on who your supervisor is and what your group allows.

It’s like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Principal Rooney is watching. Mrs Bueller, are you aware that Ferris has missed school 9 times. Nine times? Nine times. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee Mrs. Bueller. He’s just leading you down the primrose path

No go figure out how to hack the system or play sick so you can go to the baseball game

Employees are now treated like high school

Different supervisors have different policies. There is one guy in my group that I have never met. One guy I have seen 5 times in 2 years, but a friend’s group have been told office every day except for family emergencies.

My wife works for BP. They have remote policies. It’s not O&G. XOM has blinders on.

@5mez:

I think you mean change companies if you want WFH. The industry for the most part is acknowledging the reality that employees want flexibility. Chevron has a hybrid work policy. Lyondell has a hybrid work policy. I don’t hear them crying about tax subsidies and if what you’re saying is true, why not explain it to employees and treat them like adults vs a dashboard that treats them like children who need monitoring. Whether you want to accept it or not, employees are not going back full time 5 days to the office.

@5rwu and everybody else:

A lot of employers implemented draconian RTO policies hoping it would drive people to quit. You know all those high-profile layoffs we’ve heard so much about? They happened because more people than expected complied with RTO policies.

In the case of Exxon, they (like other large employers in Harris and Montgomery counties) receive tax subsidies from county and municipal governments based on building occupancy levels. You know, all that “job creation” BS. Local governments put their foot down because WFH caused a collapse in sales tax and toll revenues, so they threatened to revoke those juicy tax subsidies. Executives instantly caved and forced everyone back. It’s not complicated, and it’s not hidden or secret knowledge.

Change industries if you want WFH. You sure AF ain’t getting it in O&G.

Would make more sense and might be cheaper to just develop a real hybrid policy. But we always choose inflexibility and control. Just like with the neighborhood concept, something I’m still scratching my head over, more clunky adoptions is the way, I guess. The campus has become a glorified call center.

@1obq+1sTPBLNl Surprised no one in here mentions the facial recognition already in use for the past 5ish years. They tested it for awhile and then suddenly a lot more cameras were installed. 2019ish. Smile!

Surprised there isn’t a badge out gate to exit campus.

They can spin it as a safety issue to know how many employees on campus during an emergency. With the MC here it’s possible like HQ was raided about 20 years ago.

Come on guys. This one is just too easy. Of course it's inaccurate and doesn't actually serve a purpose, duh! It was just some item someone put on their PDS ahead of ranking to slightly increase their perceived performance. It won't work and will be forgotten in a month or two.

Welp…..

This is what you get for working at a company that’s run and staffed by boomers.

If you’re of retirement age and you’re still putting up with this BS, I can only assume that you didn’t plan well and you really need the money.

If any company can do this it is ExxonMobil. So predictable. There is 0 trust between employee and mgmt. Another GE in making.

Goto/findme2 is horribly inaccurate. Shows people in wrong places, people not there. I dont see how they could use this for any tracking. Seems badge swipes would be used

Will they soon install badge reader to get in and out of bathrooms so they can monitor to see if you exceed your alloted bio break time? Bust your quota and you get express ticket to NSI'ville.

Very invasive, and needs two way accountability! Wouldn't it be good if they had it so employees can hold supervisors accountable for how they spend time.

@vds There is a separate monitoring system to track your computer and phone usage. This is how they know the people that that claim to work from home are not on their computer and phone as much vs the office. I know some people that were terminate when they said they were working from home but their computer/phone was tracked to another location, eg, beach on the gulf coast . They were probably terminated more about the lying and cover up vs the actual crime. There are also programs to search for key words that may be offensive in your communications. One reason why I still keep a private phone and often need to carry 2 phones. Big DW is always watching.
