Can Members of Technical Staff (MTS) be laid off? We know leadership (vps and directors) can be forced to leave or retire but what about them? It's an impressive title.

MTS title these days is irrelevant. At one-time it meant something and ones education mattered as did the approval by the TCB. These days anybody can have the title and in some cases it is specifically given to friends and family. I started my career as an MTS and my title has been changed no less than 8 times. Now with the latest job function I am supporting I am told it does not qualify for the MTS title. However, the folks I work and interact with are MTS and not doing any more in-depth technical work then I am but their salary is a lot higher as an MTS, about 70K higher which is a joke. It is all a bunch of hocus pocus.....the job title name game is a joke.
Chief PJ purchaser, is an untouchable title.
“Now post the TSRs of those MTS positions…”
You can look them up.
Use the TSR site and look up Senior Member of Technical Staff
It’s the one with the higher pay if there’s two.
It goes all the way up to ‘expert’ which used to be ‘distinguished’ - so senior, lead, principal, distinguished.
The jist of it is ~$170k TC - ~$250k depending on location.
TC - as in bonus included.

College interns
There are NO UNTOUCHABLE TITLES!
Over the years, we have seen plenty of examples, VP, EVP, Directory and everything inbetween.
Korn, the same person Korn Shell was named after. He was an AT&T Technical Fellow. Yes, he suffered as many of us have, laid off or given an offer he wasn't allowed to refuse.
Member of Tech Staff and Inventive Scientist are both job functions in the R&D discipline within the technical career pathway and some of the few that REQUIRE minimum STEM degrees from specific accredited institutions.
The TCP Governance Board must approve employees to be in these jobs and like I said, they must meet minimum requirements in the STEM field from an approved list of institutions, regardless of experience. The level of experience required depends on the education level.
Basically, if you have a STEM bachelors and 10 years experience in a related field, you qualify. On the other end, if you have a PhD and minimal experience (1-2 years), you meet the requirements as well. Varying degrees for everything in between.
They are usually the only IC (individual contributor) jobs at AT&T that require an advanced STEM degree and minimum experience. These type of requirements are not normally mandatory outside of executive positions (L5+).
You all probably don’t care, but thought you should know anyway.
Yes - The clown show in the C - suite and the losers on the BOD.
"Nobody is safe". Unless you have an employment contract you can be laid off. Even if you have an employment contract you can be laid off, you just have to be compensated under the terms of the contract.
Not sure, but I will say this, I don’t need to report to an AD. Make the SPOC larger and have a bunch of us L1 MGRs report directly to a Director and get rid of a bunch of ADs, they don’t do much anyways.
Also yes, MTS can be laid off… I have no idea where you’d get the idea that we can’t.
Most of us are only upper level 2 employees and get treated as such.
MTS isn’t Union…
I’m MTS - it’s basically just a software developer with a wider range.
It’s like full stack on steroids with elements of SME (subject matter expert).
Usually people go into that role who are strong developers, have knowledge of RAN under the hood, understand cell automation, and distributed computing (Kubernetes, docker, CI/CD, etc)
Or some people just luck into it
Yes. Union jobs.
Yawn
Depends on who allows you to s chmooze with them.
What exactly is this MTS title? Is it distinguished. Who gets it?
Seriously the untouchables are VP/EVP friends and favorites. They’re still allowing Directors & L2s to work wherever they want — even though others have to show up Everyday in the 9 hubs. Hard to believe but true.
Check it out and we’re not talking about people needed in specific territories. We are talking about people allowed because they don’t want to move and others in official locations forced to move. Insane.
Stankey was born at night, but not last night. He would be an imbecile to eliminate MTS Personnel. They are considered ,"SACRED CATTLE" so to speak. Without MTS, the company goes the way of bankruptcy.
OP-
Yes, such as CEO and Board of Directors
Only untouchable role is CEO. No amount of poor performance can get you fired in that role it seems
"you can fire anything with ni-ples"
I have ni-ples, Greg. Can you fire me?
Thanks for the laugh!

MTS isn’t HR.
Member of TECHNICAL Staff.
The clowns in HR would never surplus themselves, even though each and every one of them is completely useless.
