Anybody in the new “unassigned seating” floors?

Seems the new seating strategy for some floors in Houston and for some in the new San Ramon building is unassigned and first come, first served. Anybody experiencing this yet? What’s it like? The idea sounds awful. I cringe at the idea of sharing things like headsets and keyboards.

So is anybody gonna answer why there are different rules about number of days in the office? Which groups only have to come in for two days?

@ifpn+1scN4bHK: Happy for you. The working conditions have unfortunately deteriorated and are really affecting employee mental health, so you were lucky to get out when you did.

The problem isn’t the work itself but the constant nonsense, including this latest attendance tracking and being forced into unassigned seating, that adds unnecessary stress to our lives. I’m stuck for various reasons but hope for a package in the near future. It is just not worth it to ruin my health for a company that cares so little that it intentionally pushes for what is trendy instead of what is business appropriate.

I’m soooo glad I decided to voluntarily retire in 2006. I was financially ready to get out two years earlier with 29 years of service, but lucky me, layoffs came and I got a parting gift of 1 years severance pay just for raising my hand to leave. That and 6 months of unemployment benefits and subsidized COBRA healthcare. The timing was perfect.

For those in Houston and SR how many days in office are you all required to have? Heard 2 for some 3 for others, what does dashboard track?

There is plenty of space. Its just poorly utilized. Many offices while assigned are barely used. How about making offices unassigned for folks who show up to the office less than 50% of the time. That would not only increase space but provide an incentive for folks to consistently come to work.

The idea that cubicles is the only solution to increase space is absurd.

Basic math. If you have more people than assigned office space, you either get more space or go unassigned. We'd be stupid to get more space if we are not at 100% today. I don't like it either, but...

A dedicated desk/space/office for every Houston employee makes no sense when only 20% of them are using them on an average day. We can reduce from two towers plus overflow down to half of one tower and save a fortune on rent. Historically, every project involving CBRES has been an unmitigated disaster, but this one might actually work.

Bro - firstly, I manage a few large click houses in Bangladesh (as my side hustle, whilst collecting Chevron pay for doing sweet FA) and I can promise you, we don't treat our clickers like this.

It is pretty simple really, we provide our clickers with a work environment that maximises their outputs, which in turn maximises the profits for me.

Hard to see why you would expect that click masters like me would do anything other than create conditions which maximise output? Only a management team completely disconnected to idea of helping their company be successfully,.. ohhh

@2day: You’re missing the point. The issue isn’t returning to the office. It’s not having an assigned seat and insufficient and inadequate seats that you then have to hunt and pe-k for, all while lugging your cr-p.

It's not bad at all considering what most of us everyday people had to go through in life to finish school and get a decent job. RTO is only a struggle for people who were coddled, never had to actually work for anything in their life and need to be spoon-fed. Feel free to find suitable employment elsewhere if that's the case.

A cube would be nice, but only tables are provided (maybe it will be different in SR). Have to carry all your supplies to/from work unless you want to use a shared equipment (it’s like they forgot about a recent virus). If you leave your desk you’re packing everything up due to lack of security and no way to lock things up. Drink coffee from paper cups… or lug your own coffee cup with you as well. Conditions result in less productivity.

Awful work conditions and low morale.

Think you identified one reason why return to the office is a struggle?

I get in early so I always get my preferred desk. I don't get these sleepy-heads wandering in a 9:30 with their Starbucks and wondering where to sit.

Its pretty much like musical chairs... if you don't get there before 7am, you're stuck in the cafe or some uncomfortable ikea social desk working all day using just the laptop. Someone forgot to keep the amount of people assigned to a floor less than the number of workstations.

It’s not only that seating is on a first come-first served basis, but it also is incredibly distracting. The noise level, lack of privacy (forget eating at your desk), frequent interruptions, impractical collab space where equipment doesn’t always work as it should and yuck factor of sharing space whose cleanliness is questionable all make this an undesirable seating arrangement. I don’t know about the new SR space but here it is not great.

I guess its not a big deal until you are the one forced to sit in a cube that changes from day to day. Lets see if the leaders who made this decision give up their cushy offices in favor of these wonderfully “modern” workspaces.
