Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Does anyone even enjoy working here anymore?

This company just doesn’t feel the same as it used to pre-Covid. How are others feeling? Going to work everyday just feels so daunting.

Big fat NO for me. The company has changed. At one point as a worker I knew if I did my best my manager had my back. Now everyone is in competition with each other and it’s so full of snow flakes that get their feelings hurt at perceived lta politics that it’s a dumpster fire. Coupled with incompetent managers that in many cases can’t comprehend the work or actually do the work. Then there’s the annual layoffs that are disguised as performance ratings. Honestly I feel the company has been infiltrated with communists that are doing their best to steal our technology and drive the company out of business. I don’t recognize this company any more and look forward to making it to retirement age. That’s the only reason I am still here. Too much time invested to leave. Right is perceived as wrong and character/morals are perceived as bad.

My work is interesting but there is far more politics and favoritism and rigged ranking system than I have ever heard of.

I agree with the comments that once you start looking at it as a job your relationship with the company changes. Yes, do your job but realize that it doesn’t define you. Put your energy towards what matters most to you.

Personally, I love working here. I'm getting paid the same for far less work as I checked out a long time ago after the worst than dismal treatment from management through covid and since. Don't let the company get you down, treat them with the same disrespect and contempt that they deliver up to you!

It's a JOB. Don't let it get personal. Put in a good days work and don't worry about the rest.

I enjoy my work.

My work environment is far more stressful than necessary.

Forced ranking causing coworker competition and distrust combined with falsely high ranked HiPos and falsely low ranked (layoffs) over 50’s.

I am now being required to help train ignorant inexperienced low cost id--ts in India while also correcting every design created in India with full credit for the correct final design attributed to India.

Somebody please go to the major news outlets and publicize how EM is having an annual layoff of over 50 Americans and moving that work to campus hire Indians that are so ignorant that they are dangerous.

Seems like that answer is a big NO. I thought Exxon was a great company until I read this board. A lot of unhappy employees here, and I hate that for them.

It's an unwell culture that doesn't encourage development and growth of the majority of the working population. The company does not view it's staff as a value add differentiator. That indeed is no different from any other capitalist venture. The difference now is that management are more open about that, and feel more confident to promote this type of culture, because it has a long queue of low cost people to do the work, much cheaper than enabling it's heritage workforce to outperform.

A retired XOM person gave me an old Business Week magazine from the late 1990’s that had a whole story about what it’s like to work at Exxon. One of the lines in the article said that while Exxon was very successful at finding and bringing oil to market, it was not a fun place to work. Nothing has really changed since then, even after the merger, so I’m not sure your question has merit. Yes, work can be daunting. That’s why you’re paid. Don’t think it’s a good deal? Find a different place to work but unless it’s a nonprofit, don’t expect too much difference.

Yes Covid and slow business pre Covid smacked them good. They don’t want to be caught with their pants down again. Someone mentioned site closures, these sites are under utilized! No brainer there! It’s about positioning for the future. Stockholders should be happy.

No. I’m pretty 100% of people are preparing to jump ship once the market picks back up or are too long in the tooth and have resigned themselves to lasting until retirement. This plays su-ks.
