Can someone explain CL and potential?

New hire here trying to understand this hidden information

  • what is executive level CL? And equivalent positions?
  • what is senior executive level CL? And equivalent positions?
  • what is the average years worked to get to CL26 and position? Disadvantages or advantages of being a 25 vs 26?
  • when do you learn your potential?

Your supervisor knows and has readily available access to it. So ask them. If the answer is they don’t know, I can assure you that they’re lying and you should, if you haven’t already, never trust a word they say to you from that point onwards.

I suggest you work for a different company that does not predetermine your ‘potential’ and dictate your career path for you. Measurement of success based on speed of progression toward a mystery number is just asinine.

If you really want to soar…. be the master of your own destiny elsewhere.

People given Potential of CL 36 or higher are told to expect a transfer every 1 to 2 years to broaden their knowledge.
These HiPos do not need to do anything remarkable in those short assignments, just need to avoid significant bad publicity, so basically take zero risk.
It is mandatory that HiPos are placed at the top of the rank list above all other normal employees, some of which measurable out performed them.
Within a few years, arrogance flurishes in HiPos. This is very apparent if you catch 2 HiPos comparing their career trajectories trying to outbreak the other.

One fault in the High Ultimate Potential game is the lack of off-ramp for complete id--ts that do damage in each short assignment because it is unacceptable to place any blame on a HiPo so Senior Executives never truly know the really stupid HiPo failures.

Some people actually get to move up the CL level just by being the spouse of a HiPo. We call these Trailing Spouses and they succeed just by being a leech.

Don't look too far, most ppl don't even breathe air near someone w/ CL30+

Your first milestones should be 26, then 28. If you get to 28 in your 30's, you will have a chance of reaching CL30. Most ppl don't reach 26 until low 30's.

It will be easier to rank O/E at CL25, less role dependant. To rank similiarly at CL26/27, your role/group/sup all plays into this game. Getting to 28 will require accepting assignments, showing your loyalty to the comp, putting your family through he-l all in the name of career progress.

Like all others have mentioned, if you are PMT, by default you get 29 as potential.

I mean to say earlier that if you are an undergrad starting at 22 you’ll take longer than an mba starting at 24. Accidentally wrote that the opposite way first time.

Exec CLs start at 30. Typically VP and above is CL 34, President 38 and above. CEO and Management Committee is CL 44. Chiefs can also hit execs but probably max 33.

Potentials for management are 34, 38, 40 and 44. Very few people get to their potential. Potential 38+ is considered hipo.

Typically for going from 25 to 26 depends on your ranking. If you do well outstanding each year it can take 3-4 years. If lower ranked add 2-5 more years

All new hires get default 29 potential for first 5 years now

Senior exec is CL 36. That’s when you have to sign contract agreeing to work until age 65.

Here's the blanks -
If you just started here, and this is your principal area of concern - I guess I must concede the EM no longer hires the "brightest". Maybe you are "best" at something?
ru-p-sniffin' - fer instance.

Exec- 30
Senior Exec - idk, probably anything above 34.

Going to depend on if you’re an experienced hire or not for the 26 question. If you’re an MBA starting at 24 it’s going to take longer than a undergrad starting at 22 (referring to controllers at least). Many rank groups are CL 20-25, so you could argue maybe 25 has easier competition than 25? People can start becoming first line supervisors at 25.

I thought I heard that all new hires under 5 years have a potential of 29 these days until they are reevaluated later in career. Could be wrong though.

First, I’m sorry you need to dig into this and instead, I suggest you find a new company as soon as possible. But as a former supervisor who’s jumped ship here are some quick answers: you’ll only know your potential if a supervisor is kind enough to tell you. I only learned mine once I was a supervisor myself. On a normal progression , CL26 is after about 8-10 years. Others can fill in the blanks
