Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Turning to shiny tech tools over measured outcomes has become a big part of the problem

Nike lacks leaders who are cross-functionally competent. Doesn't seem to be more than a few years back when it broke completely. I do think Global Tech started to steer the business leaders by bullsh-tting them into shiny tools over measured outcomes. I blame weak leadership for allowing that to occur from the C suite down to directors. I'd hate to turn the company back over to full sales control but it may be the only way to get back on track.

@1dlq+1tFrNogj it is unbelievable: they have no CFE, no goals, no outcomes...just giving ideas, blocking progress and no commitment to the delivery / overall cost.

I ve never witnessed any org like that

Distinguished engineers in data analytics have been pushing new shiny tools without a plan to remove older tools. So now we are paying more, have siloed solutions, multiple copies of sane data and no compliance to any of the data privacy laws.

Distinguished engineers theoretically are the “no” people.

They tell senior leaders they’re being d-mb and X vendor is selling something we’ve already bought & paid for in Y geo.

And they tell junior engineers “no, we’re not rewriting 5 year’s worth of services into Rust. Our ability to hire cheap engineers and keep 50 services aligned in their tech debt & risk exposure matters infinitely more than getting 15% more CPU performance or being new & cool”.

and is it just me or why do we need so many distinguished engineers? (Senior Director level of IC). No coding no people management responsibilities, throwing ideas without diagrams or value drops, being far from day-to-day reality but pitching bigger picture to the leaders, causing disruptions just because he/ she says so and everybody has to give response or incorporate the idea for so-called best practice. Maybe I just don’t have a good one in my team.

Yeah. This is less a tech thing and more a contractor thing. Bain is making decisions for us at all levels, and the only thing they know is how to make cuts via spreadsheets. Same as our CEO.

They never grow a company. They only butcher it and sell the parts.

The Adobe fiasco is a pretty good example of this, JD plays golf with the Adobe CEO and buyers his load of BS because he is too stupid to know any better. Adobe will fix all your terrible Nike.com and mobile problems, we will personalize everything and Nike direct will grow like wildfire. Any competent technologist with half a brain would have known that serious integration challenges were sure to cripple any implementation. Anyone with half a brain would have been able to see that adapting Nike's business processes to Adobe's software would never work. Anyone would have been able to see that Nike's business folks would never change to adopt Adobe's complex tools. You can't fix stupid and Nike is stupid from the bottom to the top.
