I heard from a reliable source today that most positions related to software marketing and sales are to be eliminated. This means HPC, AI, graphics, desktop, mobile and server related software products, software optimization, all enabling and Field positions. The focus will be hardware with minimal customer interaction regarding software. This will be worldwide.

What exactly is the loss here? They are marketing and sales people... which 99.9% are worthless. A few TMEs may be needed to explain the product and answer some technical questions... but if your product doesn't perform. no amount for customer handwaving, lunches, or back-massages you give them will close the sale.
It's SMG... they went on that cruise earlier this year, Intel would've been better off is both boats sank in the ocean. SMG, Finance, CS, and TMG is mostly made up of dead weight. They need to have SET2, the sequel... but cut maybe 5,000 managers and each manager should have at least 10 direct reports min, with a corp average of 15. VPs should have at least 1,000 employees under them. This will force faster decision making, and eliminate a lot of busy work and wasted time, plus push decision making down the food chain.
Dream Scenario
It would be such a fun project to work on. Here we have decades and decades of redundant departments. A PE company would take this thing to bare bones and retool ground up. After 3-5 years the company might be able to go public again with say 25-30% of current headcount.

AMD’s software isn’t so great. A lot of AMD developers use Intel tools instead. But software isn’t very helpful without competitive hardware.
lol. Nvidia and amd are not successful because of their software sales teams. They are successful because their hardware and software is so good it sells itself

How big are these SW sales teams? I was under the impression there weren’t many of them

Cutting HPC, AI, and graphics - all of which made NVIDIA and AMD so successful? Sounds like Intel should lay off the guy who came up with this decision.
