Intel didn’t learn their lesson

In 1994, early Pentiums had an issue with the FDIV instruction. Intel replaced all affected CPUs "no questions asked", at a cost of $475 million (nearly $1 Billion in today's dollars).

The brand damage outweighs the recall cost.
Andy Grove would have understood.

Pat G. is clueless and will burn the brand to the ground before he realizes his mistake.

In those days I was selling computers and computer hardware out of my garage. I called Intel to see if I could purchase the faulty CPU's in bulk and at a discount, they refused.

Intel wanted to completely remove them from the market because they didn't meet the companies strict quality standards.

Times have certainly changed.

Correct. It was funny because I had one and at first they said people didn't need that level of precision. I owned a PC made by Micron and I finally did do an RMA direct to Intel. Business schools use this as a case to demonstrate how not to handle product recalls. It sure looks like Deja By to this long time customer.

It took a few months back in 1994 to get there. That didn’t happen without a lot of stonewalling first.
