i don't know why people are surprised, the writing has been on the wall for a long time ... the company needs a total reboot... they expected the market to pick up, and it did - but AMD and Nvidia took the $$ ... so the only remaining lever, is to drastically reduce costs. What I'm more interested in , is what's going to 'change' inside the company.. that's the issue, not the number of people.

that said... the enhanced retirement has my attention :)
