Pat is not to blame for this mess. Intel's demise started when Otellini did not agree with Apple that ARM was the way to go for mobile processors and Intel did not go full in on GPUs for product development over 5-7 years ago. Pat is now trying to clean up the mess and turn the "supertanker" around. A major culture change is still in order.

Xscale was when Intel bought an arm license and had their own ARM products for a while. It is a little known time period. I think intel bought Marvell to get into the phone market but it wasn't happening quickly enough so they sold the company at a loss. If steve jobs wanted xscale they could have asked Marvell so I think there is more to it than that. (This was prob 2003-2004?)
Gelsinger’s major crime was unwarranted optimism. The reality check he’s providing now should have been done within 90 days of his start as CEO.
The much bigger mistakes are highlighted by OP and others under this site: Failure to:
- create and sell a successful mobile processor en masse
- create and sell a successful GPU en masse
- avoid distraction markets (drones, etc.)
- avoid toxic, demoralizing DEI policies
- avoid picking lousy leaders (BL and Murthy were the worst)
- clean up toxic/useless middle management layers
- fix the employee evaluation process
The die was cast long ago.
Intel produced chips for itself. Now it wants to produce chips for others. Fine. Intel is building a new business service against giants like TSMC that has this process down. Requirements for customers' chips will continually change. Does Intel know how to run a Foundry business service that changes with each customer? And then there is overlap. Can it keep up with demand and unforeseen issues? just saying. if IFS is struggling with leadership . . .
You have been listening to Pat fan boys a little too much.. he is no better than any of them all the time hiding behind Jesus. Jesus took responsibility for our sins this dude wants us to take responsibility for his mistakes. He is not what he says he is just a greedy pig like rest for them
The only way to remain profitable is to innovate enough to not make commodity products. Over the years Intel has done a lot of good for the world.
Unfortunately, in contrast, Microsoft makes terrible products, but it is not in an existential crisis.
I left Intel for Apple during ACT in 2015 after 20 Years of Service. Already then Intel was doomed. The fu-k-up was created by Leaders like Murthy. To this day I believe he was paid by Qualcomm to destroy Intel. The only one who could have fixed that Mess was Jim Keller wo apparently also gave up within a year ...
Selling xscale was the first miss because it would have positioned INTC well for iPhone. Then, a few years later BK came in to finish the job but slowing down R&D investment and capacity. On the side he also hustled drones over PCs like a complete bo-b that he is. He single handedly positioned Intel where they are today and destroyed or set back thousands of lives in the process.
The BoD gets an F! Eve one on the board gets an F. They should be digging and questioning PSO, BK, BS, and Pat. All of them went of the rails for way too long.
Any takers for Andy Bryant? The king maker .
What chip in 2006 exactly was PSO supposed to make available to Apple?
As I said many times before PSO was an id--t. RIP. You only have to speak with him for it to be plain as day. As for us we are still among the living who need to make a living.
Gelsinger in July 2022: »This is the bottom, we're rebuilding from here.«
Gelsinger in August 2023: »Intel CEO says 'the worst is behind us'«
Gelsinger in April 2024: »We continue to see Q1 as the bottom, and we expect sequential revenue growth to strengthen throughout the year and into 2025 ..«
The boy who cried wolf.

Intel Foundry...you know the one that Intel is dumping billions into ..is on track to LOSE 10 billion this year....Intel..has some 45+ billion in debt. Tell me ...how CAN Intel pull up out of this? I am sure Bain Capital is looking forward to a fire sale very soon..pennys on the dollar.. ..
Pat may not be the one ultimately to blame for the mess, but he took a plane that was coming in for a crash landing and pointed the nose to the ground. We may get enough airspeed to pull out, maybe not.
If not, it will be spectacular.
Steve Jobs approached Intel..i.e. Paul O. to supply the CPU into a new product called iPhone...Paul in his infinite wisdom said that NO ONE WILL WANT THAT...and so he passed... $10 TRILLION dollars later the rest is history. NO PHONE TODAY HAS ANY INTEL INSIDE... Intel was a flash in the pan.....ultimately..Intel will be a tier 3 or tier 4 fab house..maybe bring in a few million per year.
