Is it just me or has anybody else lost interest in what they're doing after the latest round of ranking?

I'm in the same ranking group as my boss, which I know is common. My ranking group is also filled with around 50% people managers. I'm told that the people managers are seen as more strategic than individual contributors. I wanted to say....your success depends on my success, so how does that make you more strategic? Especially since many managers don't even understand what we're doing. Uh, yeah. That makes total sense.
The NIs will continue unless someone saves you. I worked on a high profile project and thought I would receive a boost not. They dinged me because of the delays. I was told to push to complete the project. I tried but ran into the slow bureaucracy and persons that did not want to help. I was told not to use this as an excuse. I have also received NI for a few years now and I feel nsi is around the corner. I know of persons that once on the downward path never recover. I don't know of anyone who has gone from NI to good or higher. Exxon just keeps setting the bar higher for you and you can never reach it. I was told every year that it was a new ranking cycle and anything was possible. The only thing possible was a downward spiral. Phases like we expect more out of you, you need to apply yourself more, performance relative to peers and just work harder. They don't tell you what to do only vague instructions. The system is rigged to lower the ranking of older, more experienced and higher paid employees. This is just a fact at exxon.
I got needs improvement last year and needs improvement this year, is it over for me?
Ranking is completely arbitrary in EM. If they like you, then you are protected, and you are ranked well regardless of what you actually deliver. Your competence and delivery has little correlation to final assessment. You have to accept this. Keep yourself motivated because you enjoy the work. Don't let assessment demotivate you.
Understanding that the politics drives the most simplest groups to the top. I’m done.
It is all about who has the brownest nose...........that is why BTC posters here claim to be the best, unfortunately all due to pre-existing condition.
Work relative to peers. Meaning a kissing b nosing relative to peers. Or new hipos joining the group pushing you down for their advancement.
Darren has something for you to pique your interest.
I haven’t changed but my ranking certainly varies!
Even though “work effort has not changed”, your performance is relative to your peers . Some years your peers worked harder and exhibited better “behaviors” than you…. Ranking is mostly determined by differentiating behaviors, HOW you did the work, not WHAT you did….
In the past 10 years I’ve been ranked:
Top 20 - 2 times
20-40 - 3
40-60 - 3
60-80 - 1
Bottom 20 - 1
As I moved from bottom to top over a few years and my bosses praised my work, I just shook my head and told them “I’ve not changed. My work effort hasn’t changed. Some things just worked out better this year.”
It’s sad that the company doesn’t have the integrity to admit what a huge mistake the updated process is.
OP there's no point in worrying about the ranking. It's been determined by the corrupt HR department under the strict orders of Darren Woods. So no matter what you do your ranking will drop year after year until Exxon pushes you out. Just keep milking this dead cow dry and then move on.
At first I felt good like I was making a difference. After doing more than others for 14 years and never getting above good it is demoralizing. Now as I drop into needs improvement and finally into nsi territory it has further demotivated me. I believed the good job boy and next year you will move up. Then there is the we will find a position to fully utilize your talents. The found my position and rhymes with groggy position. I have been in this position for the past few years.
I'm the same as the first reply, I lost interest end of 2020. I really really lost interest start of 2024 when I finally accepted that the company continues to find ways of delivering industry leading levels of incompetence.
I'm just hanging on milking the final few dollars before things eventually become untenable.
Who cares about the ranking? Get as much money as you can and leave onto the next company when they kick you out!
You had interest?
