New Car Industry Layoffs: A Warning to Ford and GM

As big car companies evaluate their brands, some have cut back on EVs, which are supposed to be the industry’s future. Ford Motor Co. said it would increase the production of its big Super Duty pickups. In 2022, Ford said it would use production capacity to produce as many as 150,000 of its EV Ford F-150 Lightning. That has not happened. Ford is already a financial disaster.

General Motors Co. recently walked back plans for EV production. CEO Mary Barra stepped away from plans to be able to build one million EVs a year.

The U.S. car sector is confused. Recent decisions by GM and Ford show that. Stellantis is discontinuing a pickup line. Pickups have been the backbone of U.S. vehicle sales.

In the Detroit News today, an article said that GM was resetting it's plan for more EVs.

"The reset involves a shift to producing electric vehicles, focusing on more upscale models and importing premium vehicles, these people said."

With this article, GM is said to be walking back EVs because they aren't selling well.
Which is it? Walking back EVs or producing more of them???

Problem with GM is they will always be behind the 8 hall with their current method of decision making. No one will pull the trigger on an engineering decision without benchmarks of current products on the market. Considering how long it takes to bring a product to market in this industry you’ll always be behind doing that.

Legacy’s are scarooood. Too late to the party and the party ain’t just about EVs. It’s about technology and AI. Legacy’s have squat for software and production efficiency. Think no gigapress and unboxed manufacturing methods.

Hey at MB pumped up the stock, got greedy asking 100k for light trucks and not investing buybacks into her promises of being the one the “led the way” in EVs. Of course there’s no demand, well except for BYD and Tesla but let’s ignore that. Let’s ignore that GM has lost over 50% in sales in china. You know the second largest market. Ouch.

Legacy’s are fat and diseases organizations still cling to a sinking ship. Yup, we’re foooked.
