Coming soon to America...?

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a61532276/mandatory-speed-limiters-europe-cars/

TL;DR Cars have been able to figure out when they're speeding for a while, thanks to GPS as well as traffic sign recognition, and they've also been able to pump the brakes automatically when needed.

Having a computer automatically slow down a car in response to posted speed limits, therefore, was not really a question of technical feasibility for some time—but mandating it has been a question of political will.

That political will has materialized in the European Union, and starting July 7 all new cars sold in the EU will feature intelligent speed assistance (ISA) systems.

I agree with you.

I think that on a long enough timeline, if travelling was like The Jetsons, and we could punch in an address and then our vehicles would all merge and accelerate / decelerate / etc., and it was actually PROVEN to be safer - then I wouldn't complain. I would even support it.

I know that won't happen in my lifetime. And all the OEMs really are - or at least they were - pitching autopilot as a legitimate 'autopilot'. Even Tesla. It just can't work unless all the vehicles are 'connected'. And I don't even want to think about a world where everything is even more 'connected' than it is today.

What do you sheep think autonomous vehicles and smart roads are all about? It's certainly not so you can do your hair and nails while you "drive" to work.

The only reason they want all this technology in your vehicle is to control you.

What is Ford Speed Sign Recognition*?

When driving with cruise control activated, Speed Sign Recognition reads the speed limit sign and communicates with the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control system to adjust the speed of the vehicle.*
How Speed Sign Recognition Works

Once the vehicle speed is set, if the system identifies a speed limit sign below the set speed, it automatically adjusts the vehicle speed accordingly and will resume to the preset speed once a new sign is detected.

The traffic sign icon will appear in the instrument cluster when active and display the current posted speed.

Don't think that the camera is not looking at the signs when cruise control is off.

Bad guys will use this. People won't be able to get away from them. Sounds like a safety nightmare.

Automatic speed compliance would deprive police and courts all over the country with "income". This wouldn't be very popular with them.

More babysitting... We are old enough to drink, smoke, work and vote, but not old enough to drive our cars at the speed we want, nor have g-ns. Make it make sense!
