One day you wake up and realize you stayed too long

A lot of comments lately about late career people being unhappy. It is pretty much inevitable if you stay too long. A couple of things happen. Your ranking drops. With low ranking you receive no raise or very small raise at best. In high inflation environment this means you are making less each year in terms of real buying power. You also are limited in your ability to find employment outside due to #agediscrimination Don’t stay too long. You are better off leaving while you are you g enough to reinvent yourself.

All the checkers will be forced out. Clearly this is the plan so don't pretend there is a future here. Better to time your own exit and resign.

And you decide to stay even longer.

Now it is like working on a year to year renewable contract. Waiting to see if my contract is renewed in July.

A lot of my work is correcting BTC errors. If they PIP all the checkers, a disaster is immanent.

It is amazing that the BTC engineers that produce the errors get ranked higher than the HC10 engineers that correct the BTC mistakes.

I stayed 2 years too long… it was a miserable existence . The Exxon management has no integrity. They bully you out making up stories and gossip and lies…

I don’t know what people are talking about when they say wages stagnate after 50. Wages peak in your early 40’s when adjusted for inflation.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but even if your ranking stays high and your over 55 your raises dwindle exponentially. Speaking from experience 😉

It’s their not so subtle way of telling you to leave😁

I would say that given the current state of affairs at XOM, if anyone is putting up with it lacks the core XOM principle, the "Courage of Conviction" (or lack thereof) to look for external opportunities. Wake up and smell the coffee or get forced out. :(

If you are initially a technical person, you will wake up one day doing a management role, because that's the long-term career path expectation. And then you find out you lost all your technical skills and could not easilly find other jobs with other companies. But that's the reality.

Being resilient is a good trait but can blind you of the people and the environment around you. I messed up I’ll say it. I stayed too long.
