Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Ai replacement

Do you think AI will result in just Productivity gains, some job loss, and some new changed jobs? Or do you think millions will end up without jobs? Will engineering jobs be largely gone or underpaid in 10 years?
Between that and offshore / nearshore, how f*ed are we

It's not totally known what AI will do, but you'll see all kinds of speculation.

I speculate AI will be a tool used by skilled employees to make their job more efficient. You end up with a reduction of employees from efficiency, but skilled employees operating the AI remain. The same thing happened in the auto industry assembly line modwrnization when nut and bolt turners were replaced with machinery, however skilled positions were created to operate and maintain the machinery. not all jobs are replaced, they manifest. Also, we're not anywhere close to it, so no need to worry about it yet.

Sounds like some self important CTC "expert" has had thier feelings Hurt! The apparent attitude towards the profit center BU is typical of CTC folks who have no knowledge of how out business makes money.
On another post some pointed out the main issue with CTC is that it exists.

@1ajx: AI ... replacement for 90% of CTC. Ya got that backwards. AI will first replace the numbnut jobs now being done in the BUs like middle management and paper pushers (shipping invoices, inventory control, and HR/D&I). More physical and more intellectual jobs will be safe longer as AI is more likely to make these types of jobs easier (better tools) and to completely replace.

AI is heavy in the hype stage right now. The lawyers and politicians have only started getting involved, and AI companies need to show profitability.

Adoption of voice assistants like Alexa and Siri are way below where experts predicted 15 years ago, I expect AI to be similar. It’s a novelty that has people excited, and will make some things much more convenient but will not significantly affect most jobs at Chevron

To link a couple of threads:
AI would make a wonderful replacement for 90% of CTC. Real value for money and from the BU would be the same talking to an AI voice as trying to get sense from most CTC so called experts

Only those afraid of AI will be left without a job! Embrace it.

There are very few AI application that yet have much impact on Petrophysics work: A few fault pickers for 3D seismic and a few data analysis applications. Despite all the hype, I suspect it is still decades away before AI because as disruptive as say the original introduction of workstations and associated databases starting in the 1990s.

It depends on how fast the tools are becoming ready to do the jobs we are doing. Sometimes it is fast and sometimes it gradually happens, but for sure it will happen, as stated you better learn about new tools than worrying about what happens.

AI will not replace people, but it will be the people that learn to use AI in their jobs that will push people out. @att+1tcBYzF0 makes a good point for most people. Personally, I am 66 and retirement is looking better. I have had my time and it is time to move over for the youger ones. If a company goes all in with AI it only makes sense to bring in younger people trained in AI, and not worry about training all the older employees like me.

What happened when thousands of computers entered Chevron? Did a bunch of dinosaurs lose their jobs?
