Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Do you invest in your tech skills?

I am in my late thirties. I try to find time to upgrade my skills and be informed on what’s the latest in demand. I mean, as much as I can. I figure that’s the only way to make sure you’ll be employable. It’s not easy, it’s time consuming (and also sometimes requires financial investment), and more often than not I feel like I do nothing but work or things related to work.

You're smart to update your skills and be as marketable as possible. Keep in mind that if you leave VZ (whether by your choice or theirs) you may need to switch industries and having a broader set of skills will be a benefit in that pursuit.

Absolutely! I'm pursuing Network+ and Security+ certifications.

If you feel secure about your job, you don't work for Verizon.

You gain enough skills on the job. Why are you paying out of pocket for your education? What is it that you do, that has you feeling so insecure about your future that you feel the need to be this “renaissance man” just to be employable?
