Unemployment

Does any state particularly NY NJ PA honor unemployment for a VSPer?

Reasonable state legislatures have seen through the sham of calling these "voluntary separation agreements" and correctly concluded that these are still layoffs. If companies don't get enough volunteers for these reductions in force, they will still lay people off.

Also, a lump sum severance payout is not a "bonus" or "double-dipping". Read the sample release. It is compensation for agreeing to abide by certain conditions outlined in the release, in perpetuity, that you would not necessarily otherwise be held to. There are too many reasons that the company can claw that back, and those reasons are applicable FOREVER. For example, five years or ten years down the road, you could post some legitimate criticism about the company and they would have legal grounds to claw it back. Again, reasonable states have recognized this kind of thing and do not factor in lump sum severance when making a determination on eligibility for UI benefits.

I am glad I live in a reasonable state when it comes to these employment/unemployment issues.

@rxe+1tqkoBu0 when you applied in NJ with the last VSP, did they ask if you are getting any severance? I can't believe they would give unemployment if it's voluntary. I hope you are correct. I guess it's worth a try

There are scenarios where people were told to take VSP as their role would go away. Some did not have a choice. I am one of them.

NJ is a firm yes. I got 6 months of unemployment after the last VSP. Verizon did not fight it at all.

It’s like quitting. You can’t leave your job and then turn around and say you were let go and need help.

Some don't. Many do. Check on your state's unemployment website.

You are voluntarily leaving with a bonus - so No, no one should get unemployment.
