Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I hate having to wait even longer

I'd have preferred to know today. Having to wait is pure torture. Or at least it is for me, since I'm in no position to lose my job right now, for several reasons.

In Feb 2024 you were notified the next day. This time the bandaid comes off slowly, and is going to negatively impact productivity. Everyone will do the minimum, and avoid taking any PTO off their account.

I don't know which method I like best. In 2011, Cisco announced several months in advance that they were doing an early retirement in April or May(?) and it would be followed by a workforce reduction in Aug. They told us when to apply for the ER (I wasn't eligible as I was too young, but knew people to took it), when the ER people's last day would be, when the notifications would go out for the WFR as it was called back then and when those impacted people's last day would be. Very transparent. People pretty much knew what was happening by how their boss treated them in that last 30 days, or if their 1:1's got delayed, reduced in frequency, or flat out canceled.

Then in 2016, they announced the LR during the earnings call, and people got sent 1:1 meeting invites after hours following the earnings call for first thing the next morning. Surprise! You're getting laid off.

I've been through both styles of LR notifications here and other places. When it's me getting impacted, I like the longer notice. When I'm the one who ends up being safe, I get tired of it hanging over my head for months. But that sudden notification is brutal when your employment ends mid-to-late Sept and the severance package runs out in Jan. Many places are not hiring in Oct/Nov and definitely not in Dec. In Jan, they start posting jobs and the hiring takes place in Feb.

I'd rather get more time to start interviewing instead of knowing immediately. Anyways plan to leave. Knowing earlier does not help.

Notifications will be made on September 15th in U.S. Managers were asked for list this morning. All possible candidates must be vetted by legal to avoid violating age discrimination laws.

I think they will start notifying only after 30-45 days from now. if I remember they did the same thing last time as well. It su-ks not knowing whether you are safe or not.

I agree, just f'ing tell us already. It's a horrible strategy to wait for business and the culture and for everyone's mental health.
