To any younger folk I counsel getting out of IT and retraining in law, medicine or other engineering areas such as construction, automotive, marine or aeronautical. IT is being commoditised and the big bucks are in the hands of fewer companies proficient in AI, and Cisco is not one of them. Cisco has had its day in the sun I am afraid. It needn't have been like that but lack of technical leadership has condemned it to irrelevance.

Not many places hiring, and no one is hiring at the same salaries. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Be prepared for a 30, 40, 50% haircut. Know that your next role is not going to be sitting on Webex all day talking to people - you are going to have to go to an office, sit in a cubicle, and work like you haven't worked since your 20s.

Tech jobs are going through a major correction in salary and the number of people companies hire to do the work. If you have any skills in any other areas, consider getting out. If you're young enough and have enough cash on hand to retrain yourself, do that.

Friends on location. Hiring is pretty good, but not at the inflated salaries. What most will be shocked at is the 30-40% pay reduction. There are more workers for that job, so they can offer at the low end of the range. The problem is people making large amounts tend to spend large amounts.

AMD is hiring big time. So is Infineon. Adobe always hires but they are heavily on the software side. It'd be a horizontal move into a new industry but I think 50% of our folks would move just fine. The back office folks are good.
