Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Is everybody already looking for a new job?

I haven't started yet, I admit. I know I'm probably in the minority but I like my job. It's not my goal to leave Cisco. I know the job market is not good and that's why many are starting early, but a month won't make much of a difference in my search if I happen to be laid off. Plus, I will have severance to help me bridge the time until I find work again.

Your goal and Cisco's goal is not the same. Their goal is to get rid of you. Wanting to stay as your goal will require a lot of red knees and a permanent brown stained nose. Even then, they can find a new sub to do it.

It's not about whether you want to leave Cisco. Interviewing and having another offer to hand is just an insurance policy. Better to be looking for a job whilst you still have one - it's better mentally as well.

I am. I can say this month is critical to start looking. Once we hit November, companies will shut down. Even if budgets don't dry up, interviewers take lots of time off and things begin to move very slowly. It would be unlikely to see the hiring engine ramp back up until mid-January. Right now, things are moving at least. If we don't get notices until mid-September, that only leaves a month and a half where we could make headway. If you like Cisco and you like your job, then stick with it though and don't feel guilty about not looking.

I have secured an offer already. Waiting for the severance now. Good luck to the rest of you!
