Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Those who get laidoff in this job market

Should be mentally prepared for a very very long haul. Like 12 months minimum. It doesn't matter how skilled you are - Because theres almost nil hiring going on now in tech.

Make a plan NOW to cut down your monthly expenses.

Thank me later.

@jmb+1u8V7N4W This is @rvs+1u8V7N4W . Answer is yes and yes. Agree. I have seen too many team members too comfortable in their status quo at Cisco. Technically backward by a decade most of them because none of them had the motivation to kep themselves updated. Unless you are working at niche consultancies or government jobs, no one cares any more if you know how to redistribute BGP from the top of your head or if you know what the MPLS labels define. Or if FW rules matter. Security has changed radically during the last couple of years.

I was an IC at Cisco but my current role is admin+tech. There is the other apolcalypse waiting for some Cisco folks. Cisco managers are technically zero. They are ppt and excel experts at best. Outside of Cisco's bubble their market value is radically poor at best, nonexistent to say the least. This is irrespective of whether they are managers, sr. managers or directors - all are the same lump at various degrees of stagnation to the outside world.

My team had an application from a Cisco management person in the UK couple of months ago, rejected without a second thought. We want technical managers, not political experts excelling in excel and ppt with "great" presentation skills. Presentation skills are important but does not run the product or train the partners. The tech industry is getting "real" and grounded - back to the end-90s mindset when tech was what worked and not what sold on presentations.

Same goes for some Account Managers. An AM who I had personally referred for a position, was adjudged as too arrogant and I could not disagree. Get off the high horse and face reality for what it is. You come from an ageing technology vendor with a huge presence in the market, sell because of brand name and refresh, rather than because of your selling skills. Humility is a quality, not a sign of weakness or stupidity.

Bred in an antiquated mindset for last two decades these people do not fit in modern tech world.

@rvs+1u8V7N4W may I ask are you in management, or are you an individual contributor?
I'm going to guess an IC.

It seems like the 40-50+ employees who have the hardest time during LR's are the ones who don't keep their skills fresh with the latest technologies. Would you agree or no?

This is BS. I am above 55, found a job with a relatively high end salary in the UK at a +40% from where I was at Cisco earlier this year. A lot more work but technically satisfying. Keep your skills up to dated and stay relevant to industry demands. Coming to this site and wasting time whining and getting worked up about how "evil" Cisco is is not a productive use of your time. If you are unable to upskill yourself then your best bet is a government job and pay will not be what Cisco was paying you to spend your afternoons "working from home"while having a siesta.

Be prepared to take a pay cut particularly if you are 40+ age.

The issue you have is you are not getting the inflated salary and bonuses. Its going to be 5-figure salary in the RTP area. Its the ones that went from $400k homes to $800k homes, a nice paid off car to an $80k car on huge payments that will be impacted. It is funny how people spend like they think the gravy train never ends.

For those still employed there, reign in your spending. Learn to live on half of what you make, invest the other half. Then, when you are let go and get job offers making significantly less, you are can still live the lifestyle you have. I hate to say it, but those $150k jobs don't exist easily. Too many competing things lowering that pay range: younger workers, AI, hiring managers wanting younger workers, jobs listed as entry level requiring senior level experience. They know there are desparate people out there looking for jobs. You will see pay ranges from $50k - $125k. When you give that boring answer "I am looking to get paid what my experience deserves and what I can bring to the table", all it means is your demands are well above the hiring range and you are looking at over $100k. While others are saying and knowing that the actual pay for the job is about $65k. Then you have the "this is a completely remote job" question and just have to hold back laughing.

The people LR'd in Feb2024 took most the last available. They don't feel so badly now. Their revenge on the rest of us.

Should have been almost impossible not to save during these past good times. Shame on you if you were not soaking up for a rainy day (or year).
