Laptop after LR

What happens to the files in laptop local drives after LR? Does IT make a copy and send them all to managers?

@1rkm+1uBsVG7V, I know Cisco doesn’t “care” about the laptop. They’re just filing the report to sc--w you. They won’t try to get it back, it’s just to have it show up on your next background employment check.

Who knows, the way the bean counters are pinching pennies, they may need the police reports filed so they can then write them off the balance sheets that way as losses.

Like you, I was contacted about a missing laptop. I received a LR’d employee’s laptop & turned it into the Asset team. Turns out they’d kept their old laptop at the prev refresh (before joining our team) & that’s the laptop they returned instead of the current one. I was told that a missing asset report was filed & that was it.

Doesn’t seem like a good risk to me for something like that to show up on employment checks just to obtain a $1K laptop.

It's all backed up/imaged onto Code42, anyway. This includes anything you've synced onto iCloud if you're using a Mac - so don't use your personal Apple ID on your work devices.

Vandalism report with the police.

That’s funny. Laptop’s are a rounding error on budgets. It’s the data on the laptop that Cisco cares about. Your laptop has been backed up for weeks.

I’ve had people on my team that never returned their laptops. I only hear about it because they ask if it was given to me. They checked and said it’s ok because the data and hard drive were encrypted. It’s a write off. Cisco doesn’t have the time or resources to chase after every $1000 laptop around the globe.

It’s an adorable thought though….like they actually care.

Don’t damage the laptop if you don’t want a vandalism report filed w/ the police & possibly having Cisco try to recoup the repair costs from you.

As to the laptop, tge asset team will wipe all the laptops & test for damages. They’ll repair any issues, reload the base OS, & then decide depending on the amount of time left on the lease whether to re-issue the laptop (generally to contractors), add it to the hot swap inventory, or return it to the leasing company.

As to your data, all your files in Box will be made avail to your manager for 30 days to decide what to do with. Stuff on SharePoint remains there indefinitely. Your local files were backed up to Cisco via Code42, so if a manager thinks they need that, they can open a case to get access.

Wipe your machine proactively before turning it in if you care about any personal data you might have had on it. People are human & prone to mistakes & with the sudden influx of laptops all at once, that team might miss wiping your laptop before it gets sent back out. At this point, who cares about Cisco’s data?

Factory reset your laptop before you hand it over and you don't need to worry about that.

I better don't remind you that all your files are already in the cloud via our backup program (the name escapes me right now).

Now your next question is probably: will IT give managers access to this cloud backup.

Put some super glue on keys so lid wouldn’t open.

No idea. But I’ll be sending it back after I pop off the letters C-I-S-C-O off the keyboard.

I can only imagine the shape laptops look when they’re returned. I hope they use gloves.
