Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

LR this week while PIP notices given out - what’s happening

This is so weird and strange, Cisco could have easily eliminated these people in LR, but choosing to go PIP route.

Seems to me, LR for older and high salary people, while PIP to drive additional people out using nasty Cisco HR machine.

Do not recall this happening in my 25 years, what a deterioration in morale

The EEOC enforces federal laws that prohibit discrimination. HR scrubs each LR list to prevent discrimination on paper. PIP’s are a tool that allows them to cut more people over 40 without breaking the law.

Most of the folks who hang around here are due to generous layoff packages which used to be Cisco trademark for a long time, if they choose to go Amazon way by PIPing most of the folks with no severance packages nobody would want to work here if they consider there is no protection at all. Think about this constant layoffs threat , no packages and PIP on top of this which could be abused by the corrupt managers we have. I would rather work in some startup what difference does it make. This place will collapse like a house of cards in an instant.

Pip is is the way companies cover their a-s in case they get sued for wrongful termination

So that’s what all the stack ranking talk was about.

Can’t sack the useless ELT teams for their sh--e operations. Go low. Fast.

Managers have been told to accelerate PIPs to drive attrition in hope there would be low LR counts & payout come February 2025.

It’s going to be rocky folks, hold on to your seats tightly.

PIPs are used to incentivize employees to quit on their own. If you take it to the end, you will be fired for cause and that never looks good on your record.

While there are low performers that fall under this category, PIPs are used by managers who want to attrite a report, but can not find another way to justify eliminating the person.

If the timing of these PIPs is genuine, it would be legal, but not really ethical way to reward good employees with the LR packages while stiffing the low performers or those that did not legally fall under the LR

This LR was about cost cutting

Wrong! The LRs were for reinvesting in Cisco’s growth areas!

You must not be drinking the ELT cool-aid 😡

The managers have been told to aggressively issue PIP's to force resignations without Cisco having to pay out any severance including no max PTO checks anymore when the door hits you on the way out

PIPs are for low performers

Apples & oranges.

Could someone be PIPd during the LR? sure. Simple example could be that the role is necessary on the team and couldn't be justified to eliminate, but the person in that role is a low performer and hasn't made the effort to improve. PIP is the tool to get them to go, and typically it includes an incentive to leave.

Expect more PIPs in the next Talent review cycle.

Ironically, aren't most of you usually complaining that Cisco isn't getting rid of the dead weight? And now you're mad that Cisco is increasing the usage of PIPs? Maybe you're just serial complainers and perpetually miserable?

I've never heard of PIPs inside Cisco, this is sad news if true. I mean, if the company was operating with industry-standard performance expectations, literally the entire company would be PIPd. I am considered a "top performer" by my manager but I do far less work at Cisco than I have done anywhere else in my career. If you are getting PIPd on the extremely low performance bar at Cisco, you probably should just get out of tech.

Must be to tee up another reduction/lr round for the people they wanted to get rid of but couldn’t justify the business case. PIP will cause people to leave (maybe even a package) or make them (their role) an easy target for the next LR.

Unlimited PTO is discretionary so if the manager doesn’t like you you’re requests may be denied.

They anticipate people using/abusing the unlimited PTO which makes using the PTO subjective and subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination. It’s scary because what’s too much from one manager may be just enough for another manager.

A total scam! Cisco should be ashamed. They speak with forked tongues. Never forget that!

Pips are decided by managers while layoffs are decided much higher. Whoever decided to lay off certain employees was probably not aware of that manager's desire to pip someone.

Too cheap to buy them out. Cisco must be in the red or the people at the top are on some serious dr-gs. They couldn’t be this stupid. Managers are not going to commit to a PIP when they got all this other sh-t to do.

Anything to get out of paying. An all new low for Cisco…the shop has been hit, had a big hole and now the ship is sinking.

So long Cisco and life as anyone has ever known it before.

They loaded the unlimited PTO vacation payments into this quarter so they can use PIP moving forward to fire the next 10,000+ and save severance and try to keep the outside world in the dark
