Ninety Circulator workers to be laid off Tuesday as service winds down

Ninety Circulator employees are set to be laid off this coming Tuesday as the bus service begins its wind down. The service will be completely phased out by the end of the year, and the rest of its 270 workers would lose their jobs as part of a wide swath of cuts to D.C.'s budget.

The layoffs were discussed at a D.C. Council meeting Thursday, where about 20 Circulator employees watched as council members grilled representatives from city government, Circulator and Metro on why more wasn’t being done for workers.

“Operators are sleeping in their cars, in the parking lots, because they didn’t renew their leases, because they might lose their jobs,” said Alletha Ballard, 58, who has been with Circulator since the service began 19 years ago. “The morale is completely gone.”
