Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I don't expect anything good for the future

Cisco used to have a prestigious reputation, but now it feels like a company that's eating itself alive. There's way too much process and all the room for individualism or innovation that once made this place great has been removed. I don't know what'll happen next, but I'm pretty sure it won't be good.

Cisco is overpriced, buggy, unreliable and fragmented.

Having been a customer for the past 30 years nothing has changed. Cisco largely acquired it's way to growth starting 30 years ago and kept these problems the whole way through.

ask yourself this. If you worked for Cisco. Would YOU install anything that Cisco makes on your personal network? your new employers network?

I worked for Cisco. I saw the pre-FDA sausage made with live humans and poisoned rats. Cisco still has product lines that are more functional and cost effective than their competitors and where that is the case I'll use Cisco at home and at work.

Cisco isn't the only networking company with tons of bugs and security issues and when it comes to understanding the limitations of running a bunch of high touch services at the same time "real" Cisco (so not white box SMB or Meraki) provides far better documentation on where internal design decisions are going to bite you than most. Cisco is definitely slipping but they're not dead yet.

Most of these postings are a cut and paste from 3-6 months ago. No relevancy, broken record. I'm leaving for a month and will check back in to see if the bots have left the building.

And we don’t expect anything good for the future from your postings either.
I bet you are fun to be around at a party.
I'm not sure what happens, but I'm pretty sure it’s not good.

Cisco's positive reputation was from its core competency: Networking

Networking primarily consisted of Routing, Switching and Wireless. From the mid-1990s until around 2010, Cisco was considered an innovative, well run company. The Cisco Certifications were gold and working for Cisco carried clout.

Then...

Remember that Cisco was once innovative. The internet disrupted the old way of doing things. in 1994 GE and AT&T were the largest companies in the world. in 1998, Cisco and Microsoft (and Lucent and AOL...) were crowding the top 10. The Internet Bubble was upon us.

Cisco was the darling. but over time their core, bread and butter (Route/Switch) became a commodity. Now Others do it better. so many others and so much better.

Cisco is overpriced, buggy, unreliable and fragmented.

You just can't buy a Cisco router or switch that is not encumbered with layers of inefficiency. marketing, bad design or legacy software.

Cisco is chasing the glory from 1999 and in doing so is destroying it's customer base and employee goodwill.

Many of the Cisco employees who were layed off in this last fiasco carry with them the seeds for Cisco's demise. The ELT, in creating a tortuous firing that was artificially extended for over a month, are only partially to blame.

The real reason is that Cisco does not make products that people want to buy anymore. Hyper-This and Hyper-That. it's all vaporware. nonsense.

ask yourself this. If you worked for Cisco. Would YOU install anything that Cisco makes on your personal network? your new employers network?

even if the answer is yes, it would take you 3 months to get the PO and it would come with layers of subscription, services and gobbledy go-k that drives up the cost.
but hey, you get to call TAC. (god help you)
