Has anyone survived a PIP at this place or elsewhere? Advice for the call with HR?

Performance Improvement Plans are a cost free way to get rid of employees who don’t want to go through it or have it on their employment history - pretty sure this will be a nice source of litigation work for labor and employment law firms one day…

Usually a PIP is a formality to get you out the door.

How many days did they give you to turn things around?

Why is HR involved? If the call is between you and a single HR person only, have a polite conversation with them; if it is HR and the person you report to I would be concerned as two on one should not be necessary. Not sure I would continue the call at that point unless I had a lawyer with me on my side.
