Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

India expat vs USA expat

The reality if expat assignments :
US employee goes to India, gets 45% pay hike, salary is 25 times that of a campus hire in India. Gets personal driver as India is too unsafe to drive for American raised, but not for the 1.5 billion people who live there(USA has more deaths by car accident than any other country in the world, the irony). Indian employee come to USA on expat, gets 5% pay hike, salary is less than USA campus hire overall. Gets meagre allowance to buy a used car.

Yet Indian employee performing at even same efficiency as Us employee( which can never be true), is exponentially more effective from business perspective of cost and deliverables.

Now you can lile or dislike this, but its the truth. Exxon is treating Indians as cheap labor, capitalism to extract labor from the worlds leading labor supplier. Only Maericans and Europeans progress in the company despite of significant Asian, Indian, Middle eastern population at work, why? Becuase the big ol’ boy club promotes their own, regardless of merit, hence the toxic u bearable gloomy pathetic boring culuture and vibes at EMHc.

Any ither ExxonMobil site in the world is much better than EMHC, especially BTC , because of the raw energy and repect people have for human relations. Go there and you will learn something, changed my mind completely. We just need to pay them better or competitively and respect them for who they are, it can turn around our business and maybe help us all.

There is no shortage of Indians wanting to expat to the US. Who can blame them?

As an expat in India I can confirm it is still a developing nation with everything that comes with that. Pollution, traffic jams, power cuts, constant diarrhea! Country is improving but has a ways to go. People throw trash everywhere. There are a lot of stray dogs and rats. They will get there eventually but maybe not in my lifetime.

Why in the world would we send high value work to BTC? High value implies it either needs to be done quickly, or be done right the first time.

Why are you whining about something that doesn’t affect you? Why don’t you just get a job somewhere else?

Because you can’t.

YOU are OVERPAID!

Not fair. They should give more money to hard working BTC employees.

Recent expat from US to India here. It is ridiculously hard to live in Bengaluru when you aren’t used to it. 45% isn’t worth it. You are also invisible to managers who steward your career back in Houston so very likely to lose real potential while on expat. Most US don’t really want to expat in India. Every India local I knew who didn’t have a spouse working was eager to expat to the US, even knowing the low benefits.

Houston employees intentionally dont share complete information or ‘high value’ work woth your Indian colleagues because of your insecurity. It is a known fact in India, and a known fact shared with MC members who visit India as one of the issues that are leeping BTC to grow even faster.

All of you virtuous employees of USA, you are hated and looked down upon by majority of the world. In few years USA will lag behind. Only reason it attracts foreign talent is because of the endless money printing leading to relatively high wages ( and slowly inflation is catching up).

Paying them more eliminates the only reason we hire there. The whole point is they are cheap. As for results you aren’t going to achieve the same results. The cultural differences we cherish are real. Different culture means different results.

I would love to know why you believe the work done in India is even remotely comparable to the work completed by an American? We in America spend endless hours at the higher wage you mention redoing the work done in India!! It is rare that it is correct or complete! BTCs claimed successes are off of the backs of American's cover for you!!! This DOES NOT SAVE EXXONMOBIL A DIME IN THE LONG RUN!! Wait for the term losses due to the incompetence of India. As more and more American's are replaced by cheap labor the statistical probability there will be massive losses due to lack of skill, knowledge and experience. Facts!!!

It is the cost of living dummy. If you make 50 k USD in India vs 150k in the US its the same. If exxon could get monkeys in Africa or south America to work as engineers for bananas they would. India will get expensive as well and then work will move to even lower cost countries. Exxon or other companies don't give a s hit about who works for them. It is all about the bottom line money. Indians respect hah you guys would sell your own mother for a shinny nickel. Indians want to be in the good ol boys club as they are greedy like everyone else. Indians are even more greedy than the average person. Come on don't lie about it. Do you work for the evil exxon for love? no its for the money plain and simple. Stop whining and work or quit. Remember there is a cheap african or monkey that could do the job for peanuts or bananas.

OP - so what's your point? Tapping a cheap labor pool was entirely the point. It only works if we maintain Indian wage structure. Looks like it's escalating without added value. Guess what next steps will be?

Do you believe Exxon is sending jobs to BTC and KLTC because of the lack of US and European talent? No, those places are only getting these new jobs because they are LOW COST. Do you think Exxon is building along the US Gulf Coast because they want to keep jobs in the US? No, there is simply CHEAP FEEDSTOCK in that area. If you take away the advantage of an area, Exxon will abandon and move on. That’s how competitive companies behave to be successful. Nothing personal.
