Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Hear me out

Maybe being laid off from Cisco is not the worst thing. A friend who was let go in the last round seems happier than he ever was. It took him a while to find a new job, but he is now satisfied with his work/life balance, pay, bennies, and even the new company's culture. I'm not saying this to minimize what's coming and how it'll affect people, but I'm just trying to provide some perspective. It's helping me stay sane in all of this, at least.

OP - Did you ask your friend how he feel after being layoff and before he find a new job ?

I'm not the OP, but many of us were really annoyed but being capable, confident and connected we got new jobs in a timely manner and walked away with a bonus on top of the benefits OP listed. This includes friends in the 2008 collapse as well as friends in their 60s in the past year.

To put this and OP's post in perspective we had at least familial knowledge of tragedy and therefore did serious risk management so when the layoffs hit us we had already done extensive preparation and had a plan to execute. I also know people who lived well beyond their means and didn't have skills, connections or planning and they had their first exposure to tragedy.

Prepare well in advance, and don't be afraid to keep slow rolling the job market for a great opportunity even if you're safe. You may find a better option without having to suffer the layoff part. Periodically changing jobs adds to skills, connections, money and titles, and people who do this are often more productive and go further than lifers.

It depends, those who find a job relatively quickly win, but there are plenty who still do t have a job after a year, with mortgage payments, college tuitions to cover. Salaries outside are much lower. It might just be worth it to take a sabbatical year ( it’s a luxury)

It's not the worst thing. My life improved so much after working at Cisco.
Go work for a company that is investing in talented employees and growing their business. You'll see.
