I'm sc--wed if I lose my job, but I don't know if there's anything I should be doing to try and minimize the chance of being cut. Let me say from the start that I know full well that the chance will never be zero, but whatever I can do will help my state of mind.

You have a terrible mindset - instead of playing to win you are playing not to lose. Instead of thinking how not to get laid off, think what you can do to improve yourself professionally. What skills do you have that make you marketable? what are some market trends that you can try to get some experience? Instead of panicking and worrying about something that is out of your hands - focus on something that you can control. Get some certifications, maybe go back / to school and learn something new.
Your question is really thinly veiled to ask what you need for job security here. Job security was a benefit given by Gentlemen and Gentleladies of mgmt by doing a fine job started to disappear when Charlie S arrived. And with RV, it’s been destroyed and feasted upon. The gentlemen and gentle ladies who helped careers and rewarded good work are all extinct here. Just look at the hideous joke we call brain shark training now. The place is a loser. You don’t have to be a hapless victim. Go look.
Make sure you’re engaged, volunteer, don’t b*tch, and don’t be in a location that is not a growth center.
Current senior management sees knowledge and experience as negative traits! This is because you know what they are doing is completely ridiculous and will ruin entire BNY business lines. Therefore just play d-mb and pretend like you don’t know anything and you should be fine (until your business lines revenues collapse and everyone is laid off).
There’s honestly nothing you can do. Don't intentionally bring negative attention to yourself but Ive seen the best, most knowledgeable employees be let go which is mind blowing. I would suggest holding out and let these sc-ms pay you. take a mini vacation when they do let you go
1- Say yes to everything and don't ever push to be promoted
Or
2 - put your efforts towards a better company and apply outside of the firm obsessively, like it is a company pillar.
Work hard, be engaged and put your good foot forward.
Disarmingly simple but it is a timeless truth which will always work.
The questions are: what location is your position? How much you earn? And are you now working directly with any offshore team that knows or is familiar with your job tasks? You ought to know by now that everyone in the US and UK is a reduction waiting to happen. What can you do? Keep doing what you are doing until you can’t. Save an emergency fund. Update your resume and cover letter. Apply directly at institutions that have open positions. In the end, its not about what ‘you know and what you do’. It’s about what you are paid and your benefits. You can be the greatest in the world but if you can be matched even 50% and done 50% or more cheaper, it’s over.
