Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Houston is a s***hole

Terrible crime rate, mosquitos, heat/humidity, choice between terrible schools and no zoning or 70 minute commutes, bugs everywhere, flat, ugly, no natural beauty, f***ing mosquitos, ridiculously high property taxes, no public transit and terrible traffic, cockroaches, hurricanes/tropical storms, flooding on almost a yearly basis now, blackouts on almost a yearly basis now, mosquitos, car theft (AW got his truck stolen on his second day back to Houston lol)

If you got in the oil business to live in paradise, you chose wrong (plus it is too late for a posting in Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, Denmark, Norway, London, Paris or other historic expat gems).

Houston has far better BBQ than the Bay Area, hands down. Houston ranks very highly as one of the ugliest cities, it is the undisputed ugly strip mall capital of the world, the freeways are a frightening thunder dome, and the weather is simply awful. It’s so flat that if you want to see a hill you can drive three hours west, to see a mountain take a flight to Colorado, but there is mud brown water at the coast in Galveston. For a relatively low price compared to California, you can get a large, though often poorly built, house which you really need as the climate is so awful you won’t want to spend much time outdoors.

I have lived in CA and Houston.

Look CA has nice weather but cost of living is insane. Houston is the opposite. With the low cost you can afford to live near the office and still save money, take vacations, etc. Life is not over if you are moved to Houston, you can still have a nice life and actually save money. Yes it is terrible weather for 3-4 months of the year but the other 8 or 9 are fine.

Spent four years there to punch my card before boarding the expat train. Enjoyed the restaurants and sporting events but the commutes were a big negative. Glad I’m gone.

I don't live nor work in Houston but I have in the past and can think of much worse places to work. You guys are spoiled. If it's so horrible what's keeping you from jumping ship? No one will have you or you just like to whine?

Op, you forgot about horrible drivers, roaches, flooding, hurricane, tornados, and unreliable electric system [winter or summer]. On top of that more than 45% don't have car insurance and so many pot holes other streets and highways.

The only reason people "live" here is either they are born into it and know no better or can find a better job, or forced into it with the promise of no state income tax and affordable housing and living which begs the question what kind of life they sign up for? A miserable one!

The Stockholm Syndrome is strong among Houston supporters.

on the plus side, you will feel much healthier and get a self esteem boost as most people that live there are morbidly obese and gross looking, and youll be a 10 comparatively.

and you shouldnt be surprised because the South overall is a sheethole!

Wait till you get a storm here. You will love it then. However, your job is here, so good luck with the whining.

It’s fine. It’s no California weather wise, or bug wise, but it’s not nearly as bad as some people want to make it sound. And I’m a native Californian who would still love to move back one day.

My commute in Houston is shorter than any commute I ever had in SoCal or the Bay Area, and my kids public high school is far superior to the public school they’d be attending in the bay if we were still there.

I know people can get used to living anywhere but it always amazes me here people from Houston try to defend their city and make it seem world class. I’m assuming they’re lying to themselves so they realize how they’re wasting their life living in such an a place when they could have a higher quality of life in so many other locations if they had the fortitude to do so.

Maybe ENGINE will be a good thing for many. When you lose your job and get severance, maybe you’ll have the guts to move you and your family somewhere better. Your kids will thank you.

You could move to the ABU. When you see how expensive, wasteful and excessive is the new HQ, you'll think you're on easy street because only id--ts would construct such a white elephant.

Of course it is! No way I’m moving there. Now, if they were moving the corp hq from California to Hawaii that would be a different story.
