Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

You got two months notice. When do you return your laptop? Are you still allowed to use it ?

Two questions:

  • when within those two months are we returning the Cisco assets in our possession? I have a laptop and a Meraki Virtual Office. The IP phone barely works anymore and it does not show in my inventory at devices.cisco.com or whatever the link is.

What is the procedure to ship it back to Cisco ?

  • during the time while we still have the laptop are there any restrictions on what we can do on it (not asking about connecting to Cisco). I need some files to get backed up so I can point some people in Cisco to them even if the laptop gets wiped out. My understanding is that the laptop gets to IT and they might wipe it out

Sharepoint doesn’t need VPN, but they’ll probably lock you out of access. Office badges will be disabled as well.

It's great of you to want to transfer Cisco work products to your team if you're impacted, but given that Cisco will revoke your VPN access, you may have problems doing so.

If you're local to an office, you should be able to go into the office and transfer the files. If you're not, you might be able to put them on a Sharepoint folder if your team has one. I'm not sure if Sharepoint is accessible without VPN. I should try to access our team's site when off VPN. If you can't backup stuff, then that's Cisco's loss and su-ks for your team to have to pickup the slack once you're gone and not having a copy of your latest stuff.

Go to Payroll and download all your paychecks, W2 forms in PDF for the last 3-5 years for your own reference later. You will need the info to file for unemployment. Once LRed, you will not have access to those info anymore since those info stay with the employer.

The way it worked in the February layoff was that we kept the Cisco laptop for the 2 months that we were still employees, and then had 7 days to ship it back after the last day. They did restrict access to things, though.

You will lose access to VPN within 24 hours of notice.

I’ve been waiting for this to happen, but I think they forgot about me. I was notified August 19th and still have access to everything. 🤷‍♀️

Remember my sisters and brothers, Jesus is Lord. And they who believe in him shall be saved. Trust in him to guide you through these turbulent times and he will help you in ways that may not be immediately apparent. But he sees and feels your pain. Oh yes, he loves you, believe in him and the path will light in front of you and guide you and your loved ones to happiness.

So many people here talking about stuff they have no idea of. Yes, you can still use your laptop after getting notification, albeit with some restricted access. Yes, you can back up and transfer out your personal stuff. The offboarding checklist even says you should! You're expected to send the laptop back within a week of your exit date.

It’ll be wiped by a guy that can barely speak English.

Probably remote monitoring is enabled to track any copying or backup of Cisco laptop data. Already too late to backup your laptop, data and it’s usage is strictly for work, and is proprietary. Could draw unwanted attention to self.

How do you get access to email ? Does outlook work without being connected to VPN?

This is a very organized and well orchestrated event since Cisco does it so often. No surprises, everything is property documented.

You can still use your laptop. You will lose access to VPN within 24 hours of notice. After you’re notified, you will get an immediate email with all the info you need, including, how and when to send back the laptop. They don’t care about any other equipment. Just the laptops.
