Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco OSI 8th Layer - Favoritism & Politics makes u untouchable.

Within my journey at Cisco, I have seen 17 LRs, the most astonishing fact is always the ICs are always the ones who get the most hits with the story of restructuring, Organizational change, strategy change, and Bla...But the leaders in management sit in their position like a Game of Thrones for years and even decades doing the same Job, performing the same role, same responsibilities, same work day in and day out and they never get LRed not even once due to politics and favoritism.

I know a famous TAC Manager who has been sitting in the same job(Same Title) for almost 28 years and has never been touched in the last 29LRs, while he chopped heads from his team, and a director in the same role for almost 24yrs, and another manager for almost 20yrs, While they chop heads of ICs.

Agree, there are too many managers. That shark analogy is b.s. yes it’s true IC’s outnumber and the impact will be higher. Check the directory sometimes - I’ve seen cases of 2 vp’s and 3 directors and then the managers - this is just top heavy. The leaders are people too, and maybe it’s not fair for them to be impacted, but we shouldn’t have gotten into this situation at all !!!

  1. 2% of shark attacks on humans occurs in water less than 6’ deep.

Interestingly, that’s where all the people are swimming.

There’s a lot more IC’s than managers… just sayin’

If Cisco kept it's desired ratio of 12 ICs per manager this should be the case. Cisco has taken out directors and even VPs even before the 2001 collapse, and if it's off cycle from a layoff and they're "going spend time with their family" they were definitely fired. Every first and second level manager I worked for was also laid off, and only one I consider a mistake.

What people at the top can do that is much more difficult for an IC is see when they're programs are in real trouble and transfer to another part of the company.

The managers and above know where the bodies are buried. Basically, they know Cisco lays off people due to age and other protected status reasons.

Favoritism at peaks, I applied for almost 200+ internal jobs in Cisco using the dinosaur age internal Cisco site, being an IC in the last 10 years, with multiple versions of my resume, and for multiple departments as I wanted to join newer roles every 2yrs for learning.

Forget about getting an interview call, in the 200 internal application attempts I only got a "One-time resume pick" which I got after I had a meeting with my director showing frustration with the NON-growth mindset in the organization. When I got the interview I was able to crack it like a PRO!

When someone is applying for a newer role, doesn't mean he is jumping bridges but has a mind to learn and grow by taking on newer challenges, at least giving a chance of an interview or having an automated system - like after 3 years HR directly contacts with roles that match the background.

Yes! I can give a whole list of leaders who are in the same role, and the same title with no career progression but just with the promotion of grade, RSUs, and Bonus year to year for more than 18yrs+, and all they do is join the symphony.

They should LR individuals who are in the same role, in the same title for more than 8yrs or at least train them to a different organization like move them to Sales Services or product development. This way they will grow and the company will also gain experience and bring in innovative minds into newer roles than micro-managers collecting paychecks.

I’ve seen the same , same role with promotions for over 20 years and they are all safe and protected while IC’s take the hit. Sad part is others in team think lay off were related or performance . B———t
