Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Calif. tech companies see laid-off workers as 'table scraps,' recruiters say

And according to corporate recruiters, chances are that this form of prejudice is more common than we realize. For the thousands of California tech workers who have been laid off, this could make the job application process feel even more cruel and dehumanizing than it already is.

Yep! Regarding specialized LLMs, it's already outhere, it's called fine tuning, most open-source models supports it. I've tested chatgpt on a hard leet-code question, it nailed it! It was a dynamic programming problem, very hard to come up with a n optimal solution for many software engineers outhere(I personally failed it at a FAANG interview).

I don't disagree with you on most counts. Certainly call center/web dev etc jobs that you mentioned are goners. I would be happy to see HRs finally get replaced by LLMs. Also agree that modem work shall be, for most part it already has been, outsourced to low cost centers. Never mind the sh-tty quality coming from there (more call drops, lower data rates because of sh-tty modem but who cares!! Where I don't agree is LLMs could ever evolve to do LDPC firmware programming without getting trained on the proprietary architecture specs first. There could be a limited scenario where it could work: A company could invest in a highly sophisticated LLM in house. Then train it on their architecture spec from previously existing modem code. All this could happen inside their secure environment. And then the LLM could be 'privately' made to eke out the necessary firmware lowlevel code. Could be done in theory. But I see slim possibility of that. But one thing is for sure: sitting in a plush california office, creating low level firmware code while enjoying 5 star status is gone forever - lost to AI or some monkey halfway round the world. Either way, its lost

Firmware has been offshored for sometime now, very easily replaceable by fellow low cost humans. Agree chatgpt can't do it now, but the in the future.... Current AI is not "a glorified tape machine". It is based on a combination of a huge "tape machine" and a very smart human machine interface that can very well understand us. It's a huge milestone! It will easily replace millions of workers who do call centers/secretary/web dev/programming... Don't let your guard down!

not all the skills though. Quoting Dr. Michio Kaku " AI is just a glorified tape recorder ". I do low level coding for proprietary modem chips. These things are red-ip stuff and not a trace is available on google and it never will be. Try asking chat gpt to write an optimized hardware specification for a complete LDPC decoder coprocessor which would work with a DSP processor inside a triple mode modem SOC. What I described is a work package of almost 6 to 9 months to be done by two mid-level engineers assuming they don't have to spend time reading the processor specs. Find me one AI bot which is generic enough to do this job.
Another argument : ask chat gpt to create a design spec for a truly 5th gen fighter aircraft or some next gen hypersonic missile.
AI is just a toy which looks magical because of its non linear output. Chances are fair that A.I. could go bust like dotcom did back in the 00's. Cheers!

Well, if you write/run test scripts or do web/drivers/Kernel dev, you will definitely get replaced. If you produce patents, advanced AI models, publish high quality papers, you will be hard to replace. Chatgpt will eventually replace your replacement. Sorry to put it this way, but it's going to happen, the future is really scary. Try to learn scarce skills, if you want to survive!

@cdq+1uynklIK nobody is irreplaceable even those incompetent Indians can replace you if you hire enough of those monekys ! Wait till you get laid-off!

It's normal, we are in an employer market. If you think about it logically, it makes sense. Laid-off = (underperfming or replaceable)=lower value. If you are employed you can negotiate an offer comfortably. If you are not and don't have multiple offers, you don't have leverage to negotiate. This why it's called the job MARKET!
